G36 main design problem as a rifle is the polymer receiver, which was not Heckler & Koch's finest hour or era of the 1990s firearms. G36, UMP, and MP7 (which in many ways is a mini-G36) share similar 'flex'/rigidity issues as polymer receiver designs even though their mechanical actions differ. As I said here >>63349910 of these 90s era guns, the MP7 is probably the most successful due to its small size, and the relative lesser effect of heat/flex on that size dimension firearm.
Scaled up in the G36, its main design concept 'flaw', or rather weakness, is not the thin barrel profile but the *trunnion mounting into a different-material polymer receiver*, this being the main source of temperature differential and rigidity/flex.
Ian correctly points out in the ForgottenWeapons video, that while the G36 rifle did meet basic spec of its Army requirement, the Germans and HK also tested an MG36 light machine gun variant which shared the polymer receiver/metal trunnion design; this LMG was found to be unsatisfactory for sustained fire.
It's just not a good preferable design layout for an automatic rifle (though it is modular, cheap and satisfies 'basic requirement'). The HK433 is a much better design and combination, integration of materials (polymer+metal)

After the MP7 the UMP (different operating system but same '90s-era polymer receiver design concept) is perhaps next 'preferable' as a submachine gun does not have as critical mid-long range accuracy criteria as a combat rifle would, so a bit of receiver/barrel-action flex is, by comparison, "tolerable" in a firearm of that intended role. The UMP 45 is a kind of modern successor to the M3 grease gun, as both are brutally simple and utilitarian SMGs
