At the start through to the height of the Cold War? Yes. That isn't a bad thing when your opponents are also amoral opportunists of the *highest possible order* (Soviets).

Because he was being performatively controversial in a way that was eminently defendable, even if it was targeted and spiteful. Not even because he was Jewish, but because he was in show business and knew how to make a wave he could ride. Mission Accomplished, as here we are talking about some Jew guy over one song he made about someone *IMMENSELY* more consequential than the Jew guy ever was.

That said, the song is genuinely clever, well-composed and Lehrer performed it well. Another reason it endures.

None of this has anything to do with von Braun or weapons, though.
