Because 6.8mm is fucking worse, it recoils shitloads more, the gun is way bigger, heavier, and longer, and the stated goals are retarded. It's a devolution back towards a glorified M14.
Being outranged by sporadic and limp harassing fire from skittish insurgents which in return AREN'T outranged by your GPMGs and DMRs is a complete non-issue, and defeating Lv.4 plates (which most potential adversaries are unlikely to wear, or never will), isn't going to make 5.56mm useless.
