Will you? Will you have both hands free to rack the gun too? The criminal is supposed to telegraph his intent to commit a crime at you because he is retarded or deranged or this is his first crime ever? As long as we’re making up hypotheticals where you have the perfect situation, all the time in the world to defend yourself, and aren’t bodily hampered in any way then why don’t you just assume that you’ll have enough time to goad your loved ones back to the house/car and grab a long gun?

Meanwhile, in the real world:
>see danger
>put hand nonchalantly on concealed gun in pocket or holster
>danger approaches
>gun can quickly be removed with one hand and fired at danger because it is chambered
>if something actually happens I can shoot it
>if something doesn’t happen then I didn’t brandish my gun at someone just because they look like a piece of shit
or:
>see danger
>danger approaches, but is still far away because you need like 50ft between you to ready your pistol and have to make a decision now
>pull out the pistol, rack the slide, and maybe defend yourself, maybe provoke an attack that wouldn’t have happened, maybe go to jail for brandishing a gun at someone or threatening them with assault with a deadly weapon
>…or let the danger get too close and if it attacks you you’re fucked because your pistol is unloaded. Hope you know how to fist fight a guy with a knife who will try to grab your gun with all of his might if you start drawing it.

If someone pulls out a weapon and runs at you then you certainly don’t have an extra two seconds to rack a slide. You should watch Surviving Edged Weapons. Everyone else should watch it anyway because it’s awesome.
