basically the entire West missed China's massive buildup in the late 00s
after that, it was a huge game of passing the blame

I remember in the 10s arguing with liberal friends that we need to drop the Iron Curtain on China RTFN, and you will not believe the names I was called for that
this was already after the belated Pacific Pivot, but it being the height of BLM, Iraq exit strategy, and the nascent DEI, it was considered racist and war-mongering to think of China as an enemy, and "they" decided that what we needed to do was EVEN MORE trade with China, because that would make them friends
besides, BLM was a more important consideration, from 2008 to 2016*
then the first Trump administration came in and because Trump was hopping mad about China, in the spirit of contrarianist politics, the messaging became that China was not harming anybody and Trump is insane because of course he is

if Trump was anti-China, then Democrats had to downplay the China threat, EVEN THOUGH the Pacific Pivot was an OBAMA initiative
(also shortly before that, Ukraine was Nazis and Donbass is actually Russian, which is why Obama did nothing to Russia in 2015)

when China began scaring people I reminded my dear liberal friends
their answer?
"well NOBODY could have predicted it at the time. now what's done is done and we can't fight China so we just have to be friends and continue trading with them"
