Yeah this, answer is identical to "why 12.7 not some other caliber?" It's because they have a shitload of 12.7 stuff already, so this is an effort to extend the capabilities of kit that already exists vs creating entirely new ones. It'd be another specialty round that could be called upon but then they still have all the existing rounds when it's not needed.

Doesn't mean this particular effort will work of course, but it's a perfectly reasonable approach that happens all the time in the military. No different in concept then new 155mm artillery shells or whatever.
