The cause for most of the really impactful wars in history (I'm talking about rare stuff like Alexander or Chingis Khan's conquests, not the 214th Ching Bing Wing Ding rebellion with 50 million casualties) can probably be primarily attributed to bored, rowdy young men.
I suspect that extremely few wars in history actually came down to a need for resources or land that couldn't be acquired via peaceful means. The best way to create stability at home is to give people a common enemy (and to literally move most of your young men away).
Also, it's just human nature that victorious war leaders are literally the most praised and celebrated people of all time and it's not even close. This has always been true and it always will be true. So there's a really big social incentive for people in positions of power to be that guy.
