That would be REALLY inefficient, you're gonna carry around a bigass fucking tube of compressed air or gas? Deflagrating powder makes its own gas pressure for a fraction of the volume and weight.

There are fully automatic air guns with some half decent power to them, but they're still basically toys. You can make an air rifle which has power akin to a .357 Magnum rifle, just as an example, and that's not shabby for what it is, but you only get so many shots for any reasonable weight and volume of a tube of compressed air.
