Was it an external stimuli? People often cite the Scythians and Cimmerians motivating a shift to cavalry but they come in the 600s (late 700s) and we're already seeing a trend towards cavalry. In the reign of Menua of Urartu 810-785 there's a reference (didn't see it, so secondary source0 to 1.6k chariots and 9.1k cavalry. But why did we see the last recorded wars of Kadesh and scatterings of others being all chariot, then cavalry just appear in massive numbers?
One interesting theory I heard was the idea of metal bits being developed around the 1200s. Organic bit and a horse can chew or use its tongue to shove it somewhere it won't bother it, a metal bit and it cannot. One horse not cooperating on a chariot I guess will just follow the other horse (bit or no bit), but one horse you are sitting your ass on uncontrollable is a lot scarier.

I also forgot some earlier than 9th century examples in my notes:

>13th century Seti I reliefs have a syrian with shield and no armor or helmet on horse
>13th century Seti relief has two cavalrymen, one with a light helmet and one with a quiver. Think charioteers also have quivers on back so not as strong
>12th century Ugarit krater has Mycenaean style cavalrymen (on foot, implication)
