does my opponent have access to the same weapons I have? then I bumrush the baseball bat to both cave his fucking skull in AND make sure he doesn't get to use it.
does my opponent get to bring his own weapons? if he has a gun I'm fucked, if he doesn't I still pick the bat and hopefully whatever weapon he brought has less range than mine.
is he unarmed? hell, I think I'd still prefer the bat over a knife.

because a) range wins pretty much every time (hence why I lose against the gun) and b) the bat's gonna be effective wherever I strike and no matter how I strike, as long as the hit connects. between swinging a 36oz bat and a 4½lbs sword I know which one'll demand less stamina over time.
