Ernst Junger was like that. I think you have to distinguish a conservative mindset from a pseudo-conservative or populist one. An authentic Western conservative would identify with the West and defend the West accordingly. It's like "my country, right or wrong" or even "left or right" (perhaps). The value axis is a bit different. Like you said, courage. But also duty. Stable institutions. Reasoned patriotism. Who cares if the president is Biden or Trump? You can have your preferences but he's still your president. These sound like old-fashioned values but they are also military values. Junger was also genuinely trad and aristocratic even though he didn't come from an aristocratic background, although he wanted a new aristocracy based on "technological adepts," but whatever.

The populists are not like that. It's more like a pathological distortion of conservatism, and I think it's probably due to some psychological reason like a weak ego, and some combination of fear and resentment which they can't fully express. They're actually deeply fearful people (by contrast I wouldn't describe Junger as a fearful person, he was absolutely fearless), and fearful of strong "authority" figures like Putin, who remind them of their dads. Their politics can often be rooted in moralfaggory as well (like the left). Like oh mah gerrd this is "wrong" in a moral sense as opposed to a more "aristocratic" or "classical" outlook based on strength and excellence at least as a psychological or existential kind of way looking at the world, not following the herd, like Friedrich Nietzsche or somebody like that IMO
