That being said, many families (mine included) were poor and soldiering is a path to upward socioeconomic mobility as old as time. My uncle joined the Army for this reason (and because he's a meathead also), and we've never looked down on it as a career choice. Besides, it's a good way to repay the country for taking us in

SEAsians are poor, Singaporeans are conscripts, and if you mean the brown type they're culturally Arab not East Asian
