easier to list what they dont do, since they are pretty much at every level of command
but generally, they are concerned with organization and decision making

at least for the US WW2 army:
>LT: leads a platoon, decides where each squad goes and who the machine gun team supports, doesnt really so much as make decisions as simply carrying out the orders of the CPT to the best of their ability
>CPT: leads a company, has a small number of rear echs to manage, decides the missions of larger explosive weapons like mortars and bazookas, highest rank to still see direct combat
>MJR: leads a battalion, smallest combined arms unit and the smallest unit that can act independently, has to deal with a lot of rear echs and vehicles, in charge of deciding what heavy equipment like towed AT guns will do and where they will go, logistics is now a major part of their responsibility
colonel and above are now firmly in the desk jockey position and will start to handle geographic locations rather than individual units and are organizational rather than tactical
