The neocons often talk about national unity and that "Western civilization" needs a strong mission to hold it together, and wanting to reinforce the classics in the universities (they're big on this too), but it's an odd thing because I'm not sure many of the intellectuals were ever Christians (many of them were also Jewish and could even be ex-leftists). I always had this sense that they didn't really believe in some of the stuff they were saying, but imagine themselves as Machiavellians who want or need that stuff for the purposes of waging war (that's what it's really about). They talk very "morally" but they're actually very cynical.

So, on the one hand, they're trying to convince the right-wing rubes to support their crusade against the Muslims, but the reason they don't like the Muslims is because the Muslims are anti-Jewish and anti-gay and basically are a bunch of trad people, and they don't want the Christians to link up with the Muslims, so they do this thing where they say we have to support Israel because they're on the front line, and if they go, then the Christians are next. So I can understand why paleocons don't like these people, but on the other hand, I think the paleocons might be doomed anyways to get rugpulled by the MIC types where the real money and power is. They want to have their cake and eat it too. You guys don't like Muslims either? Well, what are you doing about the foreign Muslim students getting yeeted by Trump into ICE camps? Okay it's because they criticized Israel but isn't that what they really wanted? That these people are not compatible with the West and all that? The fact that it is contradictory is what leads to a strongman figure like Trump who holds it together by force of personality.

I don't know if Murray was ever a leftist. But I think the leftist-to-neocon pipeline comes from having felt cheated. Or a shock that the Muslims really don't share the same goals as them, and don't like Western leftists, and they felt misled by their own leftist intellectuals.
