So, I like weird fiction and the authors you mentioned, but Ligotti appeals to me in a way that's totally separate from the genre. There are very, very few writers who have the same all-encompassing pessimism that Ligotti has. The vast majority of stories that humans write, even the very dark and violent ones with bleak endings, always serve to add some sort of meaning to suffering and existence. When a story ends in tragedy, there's still a sense that some sort of meaning was generated, that one can learn how to better endure life through tragedy, or at least the reader feels thankful for not suffering the fate of the protagonists. With pessimistic writing one is made to realize that they're in the exact same predicament as the characters, that suffering and death are inescapable facts of life that can't be papered over with ideals of religion, humanism, etc. People like Ligotti don't give you comforting answers to your existential questions, they don't bother with making sense of things or denying the surface reality of pain, they don't promise you any sort of revelation about the world that you can't already find yourself. I find that kind of honesty and lack of sentimentality refreshing and paradoxically somewhat comforting.
