Fear and Loathing wasn't a documentary. It was intentionally over the top silly nonsense that Thompson wrote when he needed a break from his real job as a serious journalist.

This is a very confusing take. Are you basing your opinion of him entirely on a single film, or...? Thompson's description of the high points of the '60s was always surrounded on all sides by brutal narcissism and constant critique of the culture in which he lived. His descriptions of drug use and the sort of thing you see in Fear and Loathing was almost always presented as a sort of self-medication when he couldn't handle the horrible realities of the world.

His silly fiction is like 5% of his output with the other 95% being serious, straightforward journalism that tended to focus on shining a light on all the bad parts of his society. Fear and Loathing, for example, was based on a weekend trip he took when he felt he needed a break from an article he was researching/writing on the murder of Ruben Salazar.
