Hard question for the particular example you're given because I don't know the details. Wether the new people of Bagdad were assimilated Mongols (wich is what happens when a militarily strong people conquers a militarily inferior but culturally superior one), wether it was the old people of Bagdad who survived the Sack because of social cohesion, to rebuild the old Bagdad, but as you can see it all boils down to social cohesion.
Had Rome had a good social cohesion, no barbarian invasion could have led it to it's permanent ruin. Instead the whole of Italy became a Gothic Kingdom. The barbarians would eventually assimilate into Italian culture somewhat after the Centuries, become Italian, speak Italian. Those are the effects of cultural superiority wich don't vanish even after the last segment of the old society became eroded. Had the barbarians been culturally superior to the Romans, Italy wouldn't be Latin anymore in our days. It seems that the laws of sociology are very deterministic in most concerns, allowing for very accurate predictions and my prediction is that Western society will collapse.
