You already know why it would be insane to name your poor daughter "Lesbia", so let's not waste time with that. Instead, let's get right on to what you SHOULD name her.

A few factors worth considering:

— Try to avoid anything with a strong connotation, even if you think it's a positive connotation. Suppose you use "Galadriel", for example. Not only is it cringe and setting up your daughter for a lifetime of teasing and embarrassment, but you're basically saying, "I'm using you as a little walking bilboard to express my admiration of Tolkien. I care more about him than about you." The name should be reasonably neutral so the child can easily be herself in it.

— All else being equal, I think a name that can have an informal shorter version is better.

— Avoid names that can be easily misspelled / mispronounced.

— Avoid gender-neutral names. The name should make it clear she's a girl.

— Avoid names that are just feminized versions of male names (Robert -> Roberta, for example). They suck. They suggest you really wanted a boy and made the best of a bad job.

— If you really can't resist going wacky, go wacky with a middle name, not a first name. She can conceal her middle name if she really wants to.

1. EMMA
I admit this breaks the rule about having a convenient shorter version, but it's clearly the best name.

2. IMOGEN
OK, this is *slightly* influenced by Shakespeare (Cymbeline), but not that much. And it hasn't got a shorter version either. Hmm, I seem to be breaking my own rules. Can't help that. Imogen is a great name and that's all there is to it.

3. ELIZABETH
This has several shorter versions and is a good solid name.
