I read the Buss (Penguin Classics) translation of The Count of Monte Cristo and it was probably the greatest book I've ever read. Pretty much everyone I've met who loves the novel similarly has read the Penguin Classics version. Everyone I've met with a lesser opinion of it has -- without fail among many tens of people -- read the Chapman and Hall (Wordsworth) translation. It does strike me as almost offensive that there doesn't exist a better way to discern which translations are the better ones, especially since so many texts we consider to be a part of the literary canon fall victim to this, than looking up plebbit threads or goodreads reviews.
