My first ever exposure to Evangelion was a promo ad on a DBZ movie VHS, it was a clip of the 3rd angel battle from episode 2 and the opening theme playing over it. It quite impressed me and some time later started buying the series in VHS as well, after reading a little tiny bit more about the story on an anime magazine from '96. Funnily enough, the small review of the series only mentioned a bit of the plot with the 2nd Impact and barely anything else, I think it said angels were robots too lol.
I do remember reading more about Eva later in more magazines, basically by 1999/2000, you would indeed find spoilers on magazines, but as I remember, most of the spoilers were really funny to read because the writers in these magazines were just as confused about EoE as anyone else, and reading their description of the movie was like trying to understand a guy tripping balls.
The main difference though is that you had to buy these magazines, and most of the times Eva was mentioned in them it was in good light. Even a local 90s fanzine here made by a Matsumoto fan and who also liked Tomino, liked Evangelion too, there wasn't any of the modern hipster Eva rejection when Eva was still new and mostly unknown outside of Japan.
So yeah magazines and a (much smaller) fandom existed, but it doesn't compare to modern fandoms and internet meme propagation.
