It was but it was also shit.
- it was a pointless sequel to a movie that had a pretext as plot
- they removed Del Toro
- trailer showed it as a stupid avenger team with shitty mecha animation

I'm not saying Evangelion wouldn't need a 80% rewrite to remove undiluted CRINGE.
But it wouldn't be difficult to write a basic plot, then make shit up around.
Especially since a movie would only have screen time for 2 maybe 3 angels (actually dropping the pilot into the mecha without explanation).

I admit I didn't try to read ANIMA but I know the crazy plot, Asuka becoming the Eva, mass producing Rei loli...
But that's not the point.
Whoever approved Rebuild in the first place wouldn't care approving this pic or ANIMA, and would only tone it down to reduce cost.
