I know the average anime watcher has the IQ of a walnut but there isn't much they've done with references that requires you to have seen all of UC. Knowing who Bask is didn't do anything but make it obvious what was about to happen to me, but he's presented in a malicious way so when he shows up it's obvious shit's about to go down. Psycho Gundam means something to me, but just from the name alone a viewer understands it's some type of Newtype use mobile suit. Every reference that actually matters is exposited to the viewer, like Challia loredumping what Newtypes are and Lalah telling Machu what's going on with the Rose so she can be shocked when a second Lalah is in it. And as someone who knows UC Gundam like I do, I'd actually like this show a hell of a lot less if it was just an alternate universe and nothing else.
