newtypes are cool because they make you feel like robot and pilot create a greater whole than the sum of its parts. It's also a way to make gundams feel larger than life. In 1979 having a giant robot was something out of science fiction and fantasy, now technology makes that feel less special so the needle gets moved forward.

Yeah this is still a series with a targeted demographic of young teenagers. Strength and ability is still quantified by a raw and generic sense of applied force. However, gundam subverts this by showcasing how often human nature and the nature of conflict is unaffected by one person with seemingly limitless power on their hands.
