Certainly. I still think completely stepping on Dash's act is a step too far even for her in that state. I get it, I just don't like it. It's kind of one of those exaggerations that goes too far and ruins the rest a little for me.

Fair and it's a minor point but with all the focus on Dash it feels like it's more about that kind of acrobatic flying. More of an issue of presentation or my own impression.

I don't even mind letting Rarity in that much, but no competition anywhere ever would allow two contestants to compete at the same time without having a separate judge team. It's so contrived it completely ruins my suspension of disbelief and in turn I don't care much for the episode despite it being so universally beloved (which baffles me a bit for these reasons).

I don't understand what you're trying to say, Anon. References aren't bad unless they're too much, I think? But I don't understand how Discord is too much of a reference. By your own admission (I think), he works very well as a character in FiM. So why does it matter that he is modelled after a character from elsewhere (and obviously so, if you know that character) if the version in FiM is well-integrated to the story and doesn't require knowledge of the inspiration? As you said, that's how fiction works. I don't quite understand your meta-analysis about failing to show some sort of masculine ideals and how is that relevant at all to being a reference? If whatever you mean by that is a failing of the story told, then how is it a failing of the reference and not just of the storytelling? If it's a failure at all because i don't see it.

I suppose? One of the occurrences in Metal Gear is considered subverted, and the other is from after the episode aired. According to show staff, the outfit is based on Snake (lel) from Escape from New York, which for whatever reason isn't listed on that page. All I can say is having not played any of the games, I only know of the similarity due to people telling me about it. My associations are more Mission Impossible.
