I've recently been interested in this label, it's part of a cluster including fictoromantic, yumejoshi (english-ified: yumeshipping or just yume), fictolove, selfshipping, etc. Most people don't really associate it with the word waifu or waifuism - I think that goes to show that it's a bit of a new movement.
Of course I'm interested because we're kind of all engaged in that kind of behavior and worldview to some extent. From what I've seen, the culture around that cluster of labels seems to mostly come from tumblr; the yume- cluster is the most popular one on twitter. I'm sure just by saying this, a certain stereotype enters your mind, and it's pretty much exactly correct - they're all really deep into identity-politics and there's constant fighting about what lines to draw about what kind of self-shipping is okay and what is evil and morally wrong.

It's conflicting to look through the stuff this community generates because it's like, so passionate and heartwarming, I empathize so much with the feeling of truly loving a fictional character and wanting a community of people who at least understand you; but at the same time it's horribly cringe and the discussions about it are painfully shallow. It's like watching children play - but it's not children, these people post images of themselves, it's mostly butch millenial women (pic rel) in love with typical tumblr sexyman types: vector from despicable me... beetlejuice... whoever mr ringading is... It's led me to really appreciate the maturity and depth of the waifuism community we have on this board, as silly as it is. I wonder if someday there will be a wider community culture with a more clear canon about how to love a character.
