You might be right with your description of their algorithm, but to be fair you could fool a neural network in the same way, if it's not trained to account for that. And given that it's used to precisely ID specific songs, there's a good chance it's designed to purposefully overfit (unlikely), or that their confidence threshold to consider a selection a hit is set quite high (more likely). Plus other companies like Facebook and X delegate content flagging to neural networks, because they simply generalize better than classic sound, vision, and NLP systems, so I don't know why Alphabet wouldn't be doing the same thing. They seem to use deep learning for other things, for example they can identify what public people are mentioned in videos, and that would be extremely hard to do with classic approaches.

They do store an enormous amount of music. They even have the whole YouTube Music thing. Plus there's a huge selection of whole albums to listen to on YouTube on the official "Topic" channels. And since it's already there, given that the laws haven't quite caught up to AI development, I don't see why Alphabet wouldn't use that music to train their classifiers. Once such a model is trained, it's possible that it's made available online. E.g. Facebook's LLM LLAMA is open-source, despite the fact that it was almost certainly trained on copyrighted data.

But whatever. If it doesn't exist, then it doesn't exist. I guess my best bet would be to upload my song on YouTube and see if I get flagged for copyright infringement. On my end it's not really important whether they use classical or deep learning methods. Not very reliable, but better than nothing.
