The controversy definitely adds to the profile of music. But the music also has to be good to stand the test of time. There were other murderers in black metal, but their music was trash, so nobody remembers them today, while Filosofem is hailed as a classic.

Are you kidding me? Show me another good bm record that's this heavily distorted. I've listened to hundreds of them and I haven't found it. Plus that dungeon synth half. This album is very far from generic. I wouldn't show someone Filosofem as an example of typical high quality black metal. I'd probably show them something by Darkthrone instead, since it's more representative of the genre's usual qualities.
