A longtime Donald Trump adviser and Elon Musk had a “massive blowup” in front of Mar-a-Lago guests last week, the latest sign of “tensions” between the men.
The incident broke out after a “heated discussion” led Musk to accuse Boris Epshteyn of leaking Trump’s cabinet picks to the media, Axios reported. Epshteyn is said to have responded by telling Musk he “didn’t know what he was talking about.”
That encounter, also described as being a “huge explosion,” reportedly occurred at a dinner table inside Trump’s club. The president-elect’s transition team and Musk declined to comment to Axios. Epshteyn, the longtime coordinator of Trump’s legal defense, referred the website to Trump’s transition team.

WASHINGTON — President-elect Donald Trump said Tuesday that he will nominate key transition adviser and billionaire financial services executive Howard Lutnick to lead the Commerce Department.
"He will lead our Tariff and Trade agenda, with additional direct responsibility for the Office of the United States Trade Representative," Trump said in a statement announcing the pick.

WASHINGTON, Nov 19 (Reuters) - U.S. President-elect Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he had chosen television personality and surgeon Dr. Mehmet Oz to serve as administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, a wide-reaching agency with annual spending of $2.6 trillion.
Trump, who endorsed Oz in his unsuccessful run in Pennsylvania for the U.S. Senate in 2022, said he would work closely with Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who was nominated to lead the Department of Health and Human Services.
Oz said in a post on social media website X he was looking forward "to serving my country to Make America Healthy Again under" Kennedy's leadership.
Trump said the pair would take on "the illness industrial complex, and all the horrible chronic diseases left in its wake" as well as cutting what he called waste and fraud.
"Our broken Healthcare System harms everyday Americans, and crushes our Country's budget," Trump said in a statement.
The agency runs Medicare, the federal health insurance program for people aged 65 or older and the disabled. The office also oversees Medicaid, the state-based health insurance program for low-income people, which is jointly funded by states and the federal government. The two programs provide health insurance for over 140 million Americans.
It also handles much of the enrollment in income-based government-subsidized health insurance under the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. Trump and other Republicans have previously tried to repeal the law but now say they only seek to overhaul it.

Former Fox News host Pete Hegseth’s attorney on Sunday confirmed to NBC News that Hegseth, whom President-elect Donald Trump has named as his candidate for defense secretary, paid a woman an undisclosed amount after she accused him of sexual assault.
“In 2023, Hegseth paid the complainant as part of a civil confidential settlement agreement and maintains his innocence,” Timothy Parlatore, Hegseth’s attorney, said in a statement.
He also denied that the encounter between Hegseth and an unnamed woman, which she alleges happened in 2017, was sexual assault.
Parlatore’s statement comes after The Washington Post on Saturday reported that a friend of Hegseth’s accuser sent a memo to the Trump transition team detailing the allegations.
NBC News has not independently reviewed the memo, but Parlatore confirmed that it is related to an encounter Hegseth and the unnamed woman had in Monterey, California, during a conference of the California Federation of Republican Women.
The Post reported that the memo said the woman was at the conference with her husband and her children and “didn’t remember anything until she was in Hegseth’s hotel room and then stumbling to find her hotel room” on the night in question.
Parlatore denied the allegation, saying, “This is a situation where a consensual encounter occurred and, unfortunately, the woman had to come up with a lie to explain why the woman had not come back to her husband’s room that night.”
A group of Johnson County neighbors built their dream homes in a new development, only to watch the roads begin to crumble within a few years. They say the issue is further compounded because no one is taking responsibility for the repairs.

The neighbors keep hitting dead ends with every attempt to get the roads fixed. Each municipality in Texas has its own rules and standards when it comes to the construction and maintenance of public roads. This neighborhood is outside both Godley and Joshua city limits, so they're not responsible for servicing the streets. As it turns out, neither is Johnson County.
"Everyone says the county should fix it, but the county is saying the developer should fix it," Birchmeier said. According to the county, this problem falls on the developer, Silveroak Realty. County commissioners approved the final plat in 2018, giving Silveroak Realty the ability to start selling lots, with the caveat that streets were built to county specifications.

President Biden has reportedly given Ukraine permission to deploy US-supplied longe-range missiles to attack targets in Russian territory just weeks before President-elect Donald Trump takes office.
Ukraine said it plans to take advantage of the policy change within days.

On November 9, a TikTok user called Etheria77 posted a nine-minute long video in which she outlined a conspiracy theory suggesting that Elon Musk’s Starlink internet satellite system was used as part of a sophisticated effort to steal the election on behalf of president-elect Donald Trump.
“California and other swing states were able to use Starlink in order to tally up and to count voting ballots in their state,” said Etheria77. “The numbers don’t make sense, and the reason I’m going to tell you that is, you had guaranteed states that were going to turn blue and didn’t. Then you had millions of [votes] that are missing. This right here is bullshit.”
The account was not the first to suggest the conspiracy theory, but the video was one of the main reasons it has taken off in recent days. While TikTok has since removed the video, that has not stopped it from being shared on other social media platforms, including X, Reddit, Threads, Facebook, and Instagram, where it has racked up millions of views.
This was just one of dozens of TikTok videos, many of them with hundreds of thousands of views, that shared the conspiracy theory. On other platforms, accounts with large followings also boosted the Starlink conspiracy theory and an assortment of others about Trump’s win.

With Donald Trump taking back the White House, a Democratic congressman is calling for America to borrow from the British and appoint a shadow cabinet to "fight back" against Trump’s agenda.
Rep. Wiley Nickel, D-North Carolina, first shared his thoughts on a shadow cabinet in an op-ed published in The Washington Post. In an interview with LiveNow from FOX, Nickel pitched a shadow cabinet as an effective tool for Democrats to publicly challenge the incoming administration.

As they begin to dissect their collapse in the presidential election, some Democratic National Committee members are concluding that the party is too “woke,” too focused on identity politics and too out of touch with broad stretches of America.
Those existential concerns, according to interviews with more than two dozen DNC members, are shaping the earliest stages of the race for DNC chair and, in the absence of a formal party autopsy, blame-casting among members about the causes of Vice President Kamala Harris’ defeat.
“The progressive wing of the party has to recognize — we all have to recognize — the country’s not progressive, and not to the far left or the far right. They’re in the middle,” said Joseph Paolino Jr., DNC committeeman for Rhode Island. “I’m going to look for a chair who’s going to be talking to the center and who’s going to be for the guy who drives a truck back home at the end of the day.”

Trump's New 'Border Czar' Issues Warning to Gangs: 'Going to Take You Out'
President-elect Donald Trump's incoming "border czar" issued a stark warning to criminal gangs on Friday.
"As far as Tren de Aragua and MS-13 ... my gang's bigger than your gang, and we're going to take you out, too," said Tom Homan, who led U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement during Trump's first term and will now serve as U.S. border enforcer.
Homan made the comments during an interview on Donald Trump Jr.'s Triggered podcast.
"I can't wait to get started," Homan added. "I am excited about coming back, serving this country again."
Earlier in the interview, Trump Jr. asked Homan what his "overarching message" is to Americans "who are eager for major border action on minute one. Like, Inauguration Day, one second in, how much will you be able to improve the life of everyday Americans?"
"I got three words for them: shock and awe," Homan responded. "Shock and awe. You're going to see us take this country back."
Trump and Homan share similar hard-line views on immigration and border security. Trump's decision to tap Homan as his "border czar" also renewed concerns of how heavily the president-elect plans to lean on Project 2025, given that Homan is a visiting fellow at The Heritage Foundation and helped contribute to the initiative.
San Francisco Chronicle reported that Project 2025 calls for creation of the type of sweeping immigration-focused role for which Trump selected Homan. The incoming "border czar" does not require Senate confirmation to serve under Trump, and CNBC reported that Homan could also be exempt from additional congressional scrutiny

Bucks County commissioners voted to count ballots lacking proper signatures, violating a Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruling earlier this year.

Brittany Patterson, 41, had taken another son to a doctor on Oct. 30 and she became mildly annoyed — but not at all worried — when the Fannin County Sheriff's Department called to say her 10-year-old boy Soren had wandered from their rural home in Mineral Bluff and into town.
"It's not a super dangerous or even dangerous at all stretch of road," Patterson told NBC News, in an interview that aired Wednesday. "I wasn't terrified for him or scared for his safety."
Deputies drove Soren, now 11, home and that was that, or so Patterson had thought.
But then hours later, the sheriff's department came back to the family's home near the North Carolina border where Patterson was handcuffed, arrested, booked for suspicion of reckless conduct and forced to post $500 bail.
"It was anger and frustration, of course, because my children were having to witness that all," she said. "They asked me to put my hands behind my back and all that stuff, and I realized what was going on."
Authorities have offered to drop the charge if Patterson signs a form that outlines a safety plan guaranteeing that her children would always be under a watchful eye, the mother and her lawyer said.
Patterson refuses to sign this form and said she'll contest this charge that carries up a year behind bars.
"This is not right, I did nothing wrong," she said. "I'm going to fight for that."
Patterson's lawyer David DeLugas rhetorically asked if mothers and fathers now have to know the precise location of their children at all times.
"Are all parents going to have to put GPS on their child?" he said. "The parents get to decide for their children unless it is unreasonably dangerous."

President-elect Trump has tapped anti-vaccine activist and environmental lawyer Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to head the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
HHS has a budget of nearly $2 trillion and administers federal health programs including Medicare, Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act. HHS and its subagencies are responsible for responding to diseases and public health threats like COVID-19 and bird flu, as well as approving new drugs, including vaccines.
HHS oversees 13 separate agencies, and Kennedy has long argued they are all in desperate need of reform.
“I am thrilled to announce Robert F. MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - A man has been indicted on two charges after a three-year-old boy shot and killed himself using his gun.
On March 2 of the year 2022, MPD received a call from Methodist South Hospital regarding a shooting.
When officers arrived, they learned that 3-year-old Bryson Jackson suffered a gunshot wound to the head.
According to the affidavit, the mother of the child told MPD that the suspect, Tedrick Butler, left his AR-15 rifle unattended in the bedroom while he and the mother went to get food.
Bryson and his 4-year-old were in the room together when the gunshot was fired; their uncle was in the living room when he heard the gun go off.
During MPD’s search of the home on Tonawanda Cove, Butler attempted to hide marijuana, pills, and two AR-style pistols.
Per court documents, Butler has been indicted for tampering with evidence and possession of a prohibited weapon.
Records also show that the mother, Tinesha Jackson, was also indicted with criminally negligent homicide and aggravated child abuse.

Those results made up for some GOP losses. Three first-term New York Republicans — Reps. Anthony D’Esposito, Marc Molinaro and Brandon Williams — lost their reelection bids, as did Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer (R-Ore.).

New research by the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at the London School of Economics and Political Science has found that proposed tariffs put forward by US Presidential Candidate Donald Trump would hit the American economy and could hinder action on climate change.
The research by Dr Aurélien Saussay, laid out in ‘The economic impacts of Trump’s tariff proposals on Europe’, concludes that Donald Trump’s additional tariffs on some imports could lead to a reduction in gross domestic product in the United States by -0.64%, China by -0.68%, and the European Union by a more modest reduction of -0.11%.
Mr Trump has proposed a 100% tariff on all imported vehicles which would, according to the paper, “significantly impact the affordability of electric vehicles in the US market, potentially slowing adoption rates and hampering efforts to reduce transport emissions, given that imported EVs currently account for approximately 30% of the US electric vehicle market.”

Well that didn’t take long, did it? As soon as it became clear that Donald Trump had won the election, social media saw a major spike in gleeful misogyny. And it seems Trump’s army of angry incels have found a favourite new catchphrase to taunt women with: “Your body, my choice.”
While the phrase has been kicking around in far-right circles for a few years, the notorious white supremacist Nick Fuentes has breathed new life into it. “Your body, my choice. Forever,” Fuentes tweeted late on Tuesday night, a few hours before Trump officially won. Shortly after that, he repeated the phrase in a live stream reacting to the results of the election, where he also said things like: “We control your bodies. Guess what, guys win again, okay. Men win again … There will never ever be a female President. It’s over. Glass ceiling? It’s a ceiling made of fucking bricks.”
From there, the taunt took off. Young men are now starting to comment “your body, my choice” and “we own your bodies now” on TikTok videos posted by women. In an analysis published on Friday, the Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD), a thinktank focused on extremism, found “a 4,600% increase in mentions of the terms ‘your body, my choice’ and ‘get back in the kitchen’ on X”.
Even more alarmingly, the ISD notes: “The phrase ‘your body, my choice’ appears to have made its way offline, specifically into schools. Young girls and parents have used social media to share instances of offline harassment. They include the phrase being directed at them within schools or chanted by young boys in classes.”
Various other misogynistic phrases, including calls to repeal the 19th amendment, which gave women the right to vote, have also been trending online.
On the old warhorses of guns and abortion, liberals have long held an edge. Large majorities say abortion should be generally legal vs. generally illegal, and voting on abortion initiatives in the states confirms this.
But liberals are underwater practically everywhere else. Small majorities are uncomfortable with they/them pronouns, and building a wall along the border with Mexico has gotten more popular. It's now a majority view.
Other issues have swung harder in the conservative direction. Large majorities favor tougher policing, even among Black voters. Ditto for opposition to affirmative action. Trans issues are more nuanced: large majorities support anti-discrimination laws for trans people, but similarly large majorities oppose both the use of puberty blockers among teens and biological boys competing in girls' sports.
Views of the Middle East are complicated, but on the straightforward question of Israel vs. Hamas, Americans favor Israel by a huge margin. They also approve of Israel's bombing of Lebanon.
Finally, most Americans support some kind of path to citizenship for illegal immigrants, but large majorities also say immigration is a very serious problem and we should reduce the level of immigration. Small majorities even favor mass deportation.
By itself, none of this dictates what either liberals or Democrats should do. But there's never any benefit to sticking our heads in the sand. We should at least acknowledge what we're up against.

A man has killed his wife, ex partner and two sons in a devastating murder suicide which has shattered a tight-knit community.
Anthony Nephew, 46, was found dead with a self inflicted gunshot wound inside his home on West 6th Street in Duluth, Minnesota on Thursday afternoon.
Three years before his death, he spoke candidly about the mental health crisis in the United States, warning 'breakdowns lead to suicide - or homicide before suicide.'
His wife, 45-year-old Kathryn Ramsland, and seven-year-old son Oliver were found dead with gunshot wounds inside the home they shared with Nephew.
Earlier, police had made a grim discovery inside the home of Nephew's ex, Erin Abramson, less than one mile away.
Responding to a welfare call about 2pm, police found 47-year-old Abramson and her 15-year-old son, Jacob Nephew, dead with multiple gunshot wounds.
The blended family had appeared close. Kathryn, who went by Kat, was often sharing public messages on Facebook about Erin.
She described Erin as her 'son's brother's mom' and said she was the 'best baker,' sharing snaps of Erin's baked goods and videos of little Oliver asking for them.
'He was such a sweet little boy,' one neighbor said, describing Oliver.
Kathryn always gushed about Nephew, describing him as 'elite' when wishing him a happy Father's Day recently. The pair celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary last month.
Nephew, meanwhile, appears to have descended into somewhat of a conspiracy theorist in recent months, discussing aliens and 'harnessing the power of the center of the galaxy' in bizarre social media rants.
Trump’s transition team missed an October 1 deadline to file the ethics plan that is required by the Presidential Transition Act, the report said.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (TNND) — A pediatric cardiologist for University of Iowa Health Care is facing an internal probe over a social media post directed at a supporter of President-elect Donald Trump.
Dr.Mayank Sharma engaged in a political conversation with a Trump supporter on X Wednesday morning. After the Trump supporter told him to "stay mad,"Dr. Sharma unleashed a graphic response.
"Well I hope you lose your kid in a school shoo[t]ing," Dr. Sharma wrote. "Already you have nothing to lose, it won't matter to you anyways! Prepare for your kids funeral."
The post was deleted shortly thereafter. Dr. Sharma also deleted his X account, but an archived version of the account reveals his bio identified him as a "pediatric cardiologist."
Dr. Sharma was formerly listed as a pediatric cardiology fellow on the University of Iowa Health Care website. His name no longer appears on the fellowship's website. The fellowship is based at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital.
University of Iowa Health Care confirmed in a statement to The National News Desk that the university is "aware of the situation and is reviewing the matter" in accordance with its policies.
"The University of Iowa strongly objects to violence," the statement added.
Dr. Sharma did not respond to an email from The National News Desk sent Wednesday. He previously worked at SUNY Update Medical University in Syracuse, N.Y., where he completed his residency.

A federal disaster relief official ordered workers to bypass the homes of Donald Trump’s supporters as they surveyed damage caused by Hurricane Milton in Florida, according to internal correspondence obtained by The Daily Wire and confirmed by multiple federal employees.
A FEMA supervisor told workers in a message to “avoid homes advertising Trump” as they canvassed Lake Placid, Florida to identify residents who could qualify for federal aid, internal messages viewed by The Daily Wire reveal. The supervisor, Marn’i Washington, relayed this message both verbally and in a group chat used by the relief team, multiple government employees told The Daily Wire.
The government employees told The Daily Wire that at least 20 homes with Trump signs or flags were skipped from the end of October and into November due to the guidance, meaning they were not given the opportunity to qualify for FEMA assistance. Images shared with The Daily Wire show that houses were skipped over by the workers, who wrote in the government system messages such as: “Trump sign no entry per leadership.”
It is unclear whether the same guidance was issued elsewhere in the country. The employees were part of a Department of Homeland Security surge capacity force team, meaning they volunteered from other DHS agencies to help an understaffed FEMA as it dealt with a second major hurricane in a span of just a few weeks.

On Wednesday afternoon, as Kamala Harris conceded the presidential election, Democrats confronted the idea that a short progressive era had come and gone.
In Ohio and Montana, two populist Democratic senators who’d always defied gravity succumbed to it. A failed upstate New York Assembly candidate turned himself in to police after he was caught on camera allegedly stealing his rival’s campaign flyer out of a resident’s mailbox and swapping it with his own.
Republican Joseph Mastroianni was charged with petit larceny for the switch-up after surrendering to Socita Village police on Thursday.
Mastroianni, who is a member of the Rotterdam Town Board, had launched a bid for the 111th Assembly District — covering Schenectady and Montgomery counties — against Democrat and six-term incumbent Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara.
Despite his alleged efforts to replace Santabarbara’s messaging with his own, Mastroianni lost to the incumbent on Tuesday.
The candidate was filmed on Oct. 17 by a Ring doorbell camera removing a political mailer from the mailbox of a potential voter, stuffing it into his pocket and placing one of his campaign flyers into the same mailbox.
The Washington Times learned through several anonymous bureau sources that senior executives who run the agency were “stunned” and “shell-shocked” by Mr. Trump’s victory over Vice President Kamala Harris.
“You know the fit test? How they let the standards slack on the fit test?” the first FBI source said, referring to the agency’s physical fitness requirements. “Everyone’s going to have a real problem when they’re running for the door.”

Mr. Trump appointed Mr. Wray as FBI director in 2017 after firing Mr. Comey. The director’s term is for 10 years, but serving a full term depends on gaining the confidence of the president.

LGBT+ crisis hotlines have been inundated with phone calls from young people distressed by Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 US presidential election, according to reports.
The Trevor Project, a nonprofit collective dedicated to supporting queer youths and preventing suicide, revealed it had experienced a nearly 200 percent increase in conversations with election-related keywords such as “election” and “rights.”
“In just the past few days, The Trevor Project has seen a nearly 200 percent increase in conversation topics related to the election across our 24/7 crisis services,” said Jaymes Black, CEO of The Trevor Project, in a press release. “While alarming, we are not surprised to see that the wave of anti-LGBTQ+ politics of the past few years continue to harm young people’s mental health.”
The organization also reported that 90 percent of LGBT+ young people said their well-being was negatively impacted due to the election. Meanwhile, The Rainbow Youth Project – a nonprofit that advocates for the health, safety, and wellness of queer young people – told the Washington Post it had received more than 3,810 calls this month, surpassing its monthly average of 3,765 in the span of six days.
The Justice Department says it has thwarted an Iranian plot to kill President-elect Donald Trump in the leadup to the election.
A criminal complaint filed in federal court in Manhattan alleges that an unnamed official in Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard instructed a contact to put together a plan to surveil and ultimately kill Trump.
"There are few actors in the world that pose as grave a threat to the national security of the United States as does Iran," Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement. "The Justice Department has charged an asset of the Iranian regime who was tasked by the regime to direct a network of criminal associates to further Iran’s assassination plots against its targets, including President-elect Donald Trump.
"We have also charged and arrested two individuals who we allege were recruited as part of that network to silence and kill, on U.S. soil, an American journalist who has been a prominent critic of the regime," Garland added. "We will not stand for the Iranian regime’s attempts to endanger the American people and America’s national security."
The Justice Department says Shakeri, who remains at large and is believed to be living in Iran, "immigrated to the United States as a child and was deported in or about 2008 after serving 14 years in prison for a robbery conviction."

Trump has said he would impose a 10% or 20% tariff on all imports across the board. He has also floated tacking on a specifically high China rate of between 60% and 100%.
In both cases, the NRF found that the impact of Trump’s tariffs would be “dramatic” double-digit percentage price spikes in nearly all six retail categories that the trade group examined.
For example, the cost of clothing could rise between 12.5% and 20.6%, the analysis found. That means an $80 pair of men’s jeans would instead cost between $90 and $96. A $100 coat? That would cost between $112 and $121.
These new prices would squeeze consumer budgets, especially for low-income households that spend triple as much of their monthly budgets on apparel as high-income households spend, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The report found that the greatest price spikes could occur for toys: between 36.3% and 55.8%. The price of a $200 crib would also rise to between $213 and $219.
On the macro level, those price increases would also erode consumer spending. The report found that the more expensive retail goods would lead to a $46 billion decrease in purchasing power, if Trump imposes both universal tariffs and especially high China rates.

Not only is the presidency on the line for Donald Trump in the 2024 election, but so are his four criminal indictments.
Winning would largely free the former president for the foreseeable future from dealing with his criminal cases. Losing to Democratic rival Vice President Kamala Harris means he must face these cases head-on.

Several non-credible bomb threats that briefly disrupted voting at twelve Georgia polling places originated from Russia, Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger told reporters Tuesday.

"America has given us an unprecedented and powerful mandate," Trump said early on Wednesday to a roaring crowd of supporters at the Palm Beach County Convention Center in Florida.
Republicans won a U.S. Senate majority, but neither party appeared to have an edge in the fight for control of the House of Representatives where Republicans currently hold a narrow majority.
Major stock markets around the world rallied following Trump's victory, and the dollar was set for its biggest one-day jump since 2020.

WASHINGTON, Nov 5 (Reuters) - The U.S. Justice Department has been cleared to send lawyers to polling sites in Missouri and Texas on Election Day to monitor compliance with federal voting rights laws after those Republican-led states had sued to block it from doing so.
Both states are among the 27 that the department said it would send staff out to monitor polling locations on Tuesday to ensure compliance with federal voting rights laws, as it has done regularly during national elections.
Republican former President Donald Trump faces Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris in Tuesday's presidential election. Trump continues to make false claims of widespread voting fraud in his 2020 loss to Democrat Joe Biden and has urged his supporters to turn out at polling places to watch for alleged fraud.
Judges in overnight decisions declined requests by Missouri and Texas for court orders to block the Justice Department monitors. Shortly before the judge's decision in the Texas case, the state's attorney general reached an agreement with the department regarding the conduct of its election monitors.
While some of the U.S. locations that the Justice Department will monitor include key counties in the seven battleground states expected to help decide the election's outcome, it is sending personnel to other locations such as counties in Texas, Massachusetts, Alaska, South Dakota and New Jersey.
Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey, a Republican, in a lawsuit filed on Monday accused the department of making an 11th-hour plan to "displace state election authorities" by sending poll monitors to locations throughout St. Louis.
But U.S. District Judge Sarah Pitlyk, a Trump appointee in St. Louis, denied, opens new tab Bailey's request for a temporary restraining order, saying that "the harms that the state of Missouri anticipates are speculative."

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A white supremacist is in custody after authorities said they thwarted his plans to destroy an energy facility in Middle Tennessee and brought him into custody. Skyler Philippi, 24, from Columbia, Tennessee, faces charges of trying to use a weapon of mass destruction and trying to destroy an energy facility.
A complaint said Philippi began talking about destroying an energy facility as part of his accelerationist ideology. This kind of ideology generally calls for widespread destabilization through the rapid growth of specific systems, or through violence.
The complaint outlines a conversation Philippi had with a confidential source, where he talked about his belief that attacking electricity substations could destabilize areas across the country and further his accelerationist beliefs. He also spoke with the source about his plans to derail a train in Middle Tennessee and asked for help getting a train de-railer, according to authorities.
Later, the complaint said Philippi told another person he had written a manifesto that discussed his desire to attack "high tax cities" and industrial areas. In that conversation, he also talked about getting into a shooting involving a Black person in Louisville and said he was previously affiliated with white supremacist and neo-Nazi groups: the Atomwaffen Division and the National Alliance.
The groups have targeted racial minorities, the Jewish community, the LGBTQ+ community, the government, journalists and infrastructure. His manifesto also included references to white supremacist literature.
Some Republican-led states will not allow federal poll monitors at voting locations on Election Day, officials told ABC News on Thursday.
The Department of Justice has a long-held tradition of deploying election monitors across the country to "help assess compliance with federal voting laws," according to the department. But recently, in some states, Republicans have blocked federal authorities from monitoring both federal and non-federal elections.
In Texas, a spokesperson for the state's Republican secretary of state told ABC News in a statement that federal monitors are not authorized to be inside polling locations.
Instead, state inspectors will be deployed to "various locations" throughout Texas, the spokesperson said.
Texas Democrats have raised concerns about the decision, penning a letter to the Department of Justice in September asking federal officials to intervene and exercise its authority to monitor the state's five most populous counties.
"Recent actions by Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton have increased the urgency for federal election monitors in our state," the letter said of the governor and attorney general, who are both Republicans.
The group of Texas Democrats also said in the letter that the move by the state to block federal monitors affects minority voters.
"As the largest minority state under total conservative control, Texas voters -- particularly minority voters -- are constantly under attack for merely attempting their rights," the letter said.
The Civil Rights Division of the DOJ, which was created in 1957 to enforce laws that prohibit discrimination, has regularly dispatched poll monitors to ensure compliance with federal voting laws, particularly in communities with vulnerable populations.

The media and consulting firm linked to fraudulent voter registration forms in Pennsylvania earlier this week has gone dark as of Saturday.
Field and Media Corps – the website and social media accounts of which are now defunct – is an Arizona-based company that contracts with Everybody Votes to run a canvassing operation in Pennsylvania and other states that target low-income minority residents unregistered to vote.
The Monroe County District Attorney’s Office confirmed Wednesday that 30 registration forms contained fraudulent information, including an application submitted on behalf of a dead resident.
Everybody Votes runs an office in Lancaster County, where election workers recently found suspicious registration forms among a batch of 2,500 applications delivered last week. Investigators there said at least 60% of those reviewed were fraudulent. So far, the campaign has not been tied directly to the investigation.
Not so in nearby York County, where law enforcement continues reviewing another delivery from the operation leading up to the Oct. 22 deadline to register.
On Wednesday, the America First Policy Institute, a conservative-leaning research nonprofit, demanded a federal investigation into the company.
“Where there’s fire, there’s fire,” said Hogan Gidley, vice chairman of the institute’s Center for Election Integrity. “Thousands of instances of reported voter registration fraud have now been confirmed throughout Pennsylvania.”
He described Field and Media Corps, established in 2017, as a “high-powered left-wing organization” that may have launched similar “schemes” across the country that require state-level investigations.

WASHINGTON, Nov 1 (Reuters) - Donald Trump called former lawmaker Liz Cheney "a radical war hawk" and suggested she herself should face combat with guns trained on her, drawing condemnation from critics who said his comments showed he would target his enemies in office if he wins the presidential election.
Former President Trump, who faces Democratic U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris in Tuesday's election, also called Cheney on Thursday "a very dumb individual" and noted that she and her father, former Republican Vice President Dick Cheney, refused to back his third presidential run.
"She's a radical war hawk. Let's put her with a rifle standing there with nine barrels shooting at her, OK? Let's see how she feels about it. You know, when the guns are trained on her face," Trump told supporters at a campaign event with former Fox News television host Tucker Carlson in Arizona.
Trump has repeatedly vowed to investigate or prosecute his political rivals, including Cheney, as well as election workers, journalists and left-wing Americans, among others, and has said the military could be used against what he calls "radical left lunatics" if there is unrest on Election Day.
One of the most high-profile Republicans to turn against Trump, Cheney has endorsed Harris in the Nov. 5 contest, saying she crossed party lines to put the country before politics and calling Trump a "danger."

A New York author and journalist has released audio tapes that appear to detail how Donald Trump had a close social relationship with the late sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein that he has long denied.
The tapes, released as part of the Fire and Fury podcast series by Michael Wolff, author of three books about Trump’s first term and 2020 bid for a second, and James Truman, former NME journalist and Condé Nast editorial director, include Epstein’s thoughts about the inner workings of the former US president’s inner circle.
Wolff says the recordings were made during a 2017 discussion with Epstein about writing his biography. Epstein died by suicide while awaiting trial on sex-trafficking charges two years later. Despite his crimes, the wealthy financier was at the heart of a social circle of the rich and powerful in the US and overseas that contained many famous names.
Wolff claims the excerpt tape is a mere fraction of some “100 hours of Epstein talking about the inner workings of the Trump White House and about his longstanding, deep relationship with Donald Trump”.
Trump once praised Epstein in conversation with New York magazine in 2002, calling him “a terrific guy” and hinted at his interest in women “on the young side”. But he claimed the pair had fallen out 15 years before Epstein was convicted on a prostitution solicitation charge in Florida in 2008.
“I was not a fan of his, that I can tell you,” the president said after Epstein was arrested on federal sex-trafficking charges in 2019.
The Fire and Fury tapes reveal Epstein recalling how then president Trump played his circle off against each other. “His people fight each other and then he poisons the well outside,” he says.
The author names Steve Bannon, Reince Priebus and Kellyanne Conway as being among the acolytes and officials Trump played off each other like courtiers in a competitive court.
Mark Ruffalo, aka Hulk, gathered a group of his fellow Avengers to endorse Kamala Harris for President on Thursday.
“Don’t sit this one out. It’s the one where we will lose big: Project 2025, women’s reproductive rights, climate change, LGBTQIA+ rights, public education, student debt relief, Affordable Care Act, Social Security, and as of today, life saving vaccines. This shit is real and it’s going to come for you,” Ruffalo wrote on Twitter.
He posted a video that starts out with Scarlett Johansson, who says, “Thanks for jumping on the call,” as Don Cheadle says, “I think you mean assembling!” Also on the endorsement call were “Black Panther” star Danai Gurira, Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans.
“It is our pleasure to come together and to get the vote out this election,” says Gurira in the video. As the Avengers try to come up with a catchphrase for Kamala Harris, Gurira suggests, “Kamala Forever.”
Eventually they settle on “I’m Kamala Harris, and I’m down with democracy.” Though it’s doubtful the Vice President will adopt their suggested catchphrase at this point in her campaign, it couldn’t hurt to have some of the world’s most powerful superheroes in your corner.

The 78-year-old, who has been ramping up the aggressive rhetoric with 'scum' comments but struggling to keep his rally crowds awake, arrived at his Green Bay rally on Wednesday night in a garbage truck.

During his rally, which he arrived late to, Trump explained that his advisors came up with the garbage truck stunt just 30 minutes before landing.
"I said I think it's ok but I don't feel comfortable wearing a suit...then they said, 'Sir we have a vest.' I said, 'Should I leave my suit on and put it over the vest? But that doesn't look very good.'
Trump went on to explain he feared getting up into a passenger seat that was so high, but was pleased to see a "beautiful" driver who looked like Carrie Grant.
He told his followers: "I said, 'Man this is bad as all the cameras are on me. I said, 'Oh man, if I don't get up there this will be very embarrassing."
Trump even acknowledged that people might say he is "cognitively and physically impaired."

Chinese Student Accused of Illegal Vote Tried to Retrieve Ballot: Report
A19-year-old international university student from China who is not a U.S. citizen—and accused of illegally voting in Michigan—reportedly asked for his ballot back after casting it, according to local news outlet WLNS-TV Channel 6.
On Wednesday, Washtenaw County prosecutor Eli Savit and Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson published a joint statement regarding the incident: "Following an alleged violation of the law involving a non-U.S. citizen voting at an Ann Arbor early voting site on Sunday, October 27, the Washtenaw County Prosecutor's Office has authorized criminal charges."
The male student attends the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and his name has not been made public.
He's accused of falsely claiming to be a U.S. citizen when he registered to vote on the same day he cast his ballot, WLNS reported. The student was charged with one count of attempting to vote as an unauthorized elector and one count of forgery in order to register to vote.
Newsweek reached out to the secretary of state's press team, the Washtenaw County sheriff's office and the Michigan attorney general's office for comment via email on Wednesday evening.
Benson's office told WLNS that the student's ballot was put through the tabulator and will be counted in the coming general election, as once ballots are processed, it is not possible to retrieve them.
The former Republican governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger has announced that he is backing Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris in next week’s election.
In a long post on X, Schwarzenegger, 77, said that while he doesn’t “really do endorsements” … “hate[s] politics” and doesn’t “trust most politicians”, he felt compelled to formally endorse Harris and her pick for vice president Tim Walz.
“I will always be an American before I am a Republican,” he wrote. “That’s why, this week, I am voting for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. I’m sharing it with all of you because I think there are a lot of you who feel like I do. You don’t recognise our country. And you are right to be furious.”
Schwarzenegger, who quit acting between 2003 and 2011 while he served in California, continued by writing that he was disappointed in all those who have been in power in the US over the past decades who have discussed addressing the national debt and “our broken immigration system” yet not managing to do so. This continued during election campaigning, he said, as politicians prefer “having talking points” for elections rather than performing “the public service that will make Americans’ lives better.”
“It is a just game to them. But it is life for my fellow Americans. We should be pissed,” Schwarzenegger wrote. “But a candidate who won’t respect your vote unless it is for him, a candidate who will send his followers to storm the Capitol while he watches with a Diet Coke, a candidate who has shown no ability to work to pass any policy besides a tax cut that helped his donors and other rich people like me but helped no one else else, a candidate who thinks Americans who disagree with him are the bigger enemies than China, Russia, or North Korea – that won’t solve our problems.”

A broken ice cream machine is a familiar inconvenience to McDonald's customers.
Franchise owners have complained about difficulties fixing the machines, McDonald's itself has poked fun at how often the machines are seemingly broken, and there is even a dedicated independent site for customers to see when and where they might be denied a McFlurry.
Those worries may soon be a thing of the past, after the U.S. Copyright Office issued a new set of exemptions last week that allows restaurants to repair equipment used in "retail-level commercial food preparation," which includes those soft-serve ice cream machines used to make McFlurrys.
Public Knowledge, a consumer advocacy group, and e-commerce website iFixit petitioned the U.S. Copyright Office for the exemption, which went into effect Monday.
"There’s nothing vanilla about this victory; an exemption for retail-level commercial food preparation equipment will spark a flurry of third-party repair activity and enable businesses to better serve their customers," said Meredith Rose, senior policy counsel at Public Knowledge.
Right to repair
Section 1201 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act makes it illegal for third parties to bypass digital locks on any copyrighted materiel, including software used in commercial devices like those McDonald's ice cream machines, even for repairs.
What that has meant for McFlurry fans until Monday is that every time an ice cream machine in a McDonald's location breaks or has any kind of technical problem, it can only be repaired by the manufacturer and copyright holder.

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Wednesday allowed Republican officials in Virginia to revive a plan aimed at removing noncitizen voters from the rolls ahead of next week’s election.
The justices blocked a federal judge’s ruling that put the program on hold and required the state to restore 1,600 voters to the rolls.
The brief order noted that the three liberal justices on the court, which has a 6-3 conservative majority, all dissented.
"This is a victory for commonsense and election fairness," Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin, a Republican who announced the plan in August, said in a statement.
"Virginians can cast their ballots on Election Day knowing that Virginia’s elections are fair, secure, and free from politically-motivated interference," he added.
Virginia has same-day voter registration, meaning that any eligible voter who was removed from the rolls should still be able to vote.
Civil rights groups, backed by the Biden administration, challenged the plan, saying it had led to some legal voters being removed from the rolls, too. The Justice Department said that while states can review its voter rolls, it cannot do so right before an election.
