The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau was set up by president Obama in the wake of the Great Recession in part to prevent the events of the 2008 housing crisis from happening again. Financial and banking lobbyists have long pushed back against the agency, citing government overreach.
Now, with the President Trump’s pledge to weed out waste and inefficiency across a variety of departments and agencies, the future of the CFPB seems murky. Texas’ own U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz has introduced a bill to defund the agency in its entirety, and this week staff and contractors were toldthey “cannot perform any work tasks.”
