you got the point. de-extinction would suggest they've successfully cloned an extinct animal, but the new wolves they've created are not clones or anything really resembling a dire wolf aside from them both being large canids, and yet Colossal is calling these modified gray wolves "Aenocyon dirus". this whole thing just looks like a publicity stunt, especially with their choice to use gray wolves as a base despite them not being very closely related to dire wolves at all. there are plenty of recently extinct and famous animals that could be cloned, but out of all extinct animals, they've decided to restore the most iconic cenozoic mammals first and foremost. looks shady in hindsight
