Christianity has multiple dogmas, there are multiple religions beyond that, and beyond that "being religious" doesn't mean strictly adhering to the tenants of an organized religion, as evidenced by all the social conservatives that would sooner shoot their neighbor than love them if they thought they could get away with it.

Also the mere existence of multiple religions disproves any inherent conservatism to religion. Religion is just a way of organizing people under a faith structure. That organization can seek to bind people to extant traditions and interpretations, establish new ones, seek to return to lost traditions real or imagined, or mix the new and the old. Generally whatever is most politically convenient. Syncretism is a popular trait in world religions for a reason.
