Yes, the GOP have pursued short term gain for like 60 years and it's only served them politically. Other factors and timings have helped them out like SCOTUS deaths and retirements, the concentration of Dem votes in larger cities in fewer states, the Dems turning to neoliberalism out of fear of neoconservatism, etc, but Republicans absolutely and invariably pursue short term gain over long term.

And that works fine for them. If they're worried about inevitably suffering collapse, that just means that when they're in power they just need to do as much damage as possible and appoint as many judges as possible to slow down any repairs.

Look, you'll know Republicans genuinely think they're in trouble when they kill the filibuster. That will be their last hurrah. Til then any signs of distress are just reliable Republican voters weakly moaning while their elected officials rape their asses as per usual.
