Well you need some sort of camper van, which can be anything from a sub $10k buildout on a used tradesman vehicle to like $200k.

But the real thing people want is the lifestyle, which generally can be described as a nomadic life working seasonal jobs in the outdoors industry living in gorgeous places in a relatively carefree, highly social, anti-consumer milieu. In the in between you vagabond around traveling, either in your van or abroad.

These jobs can be anything from raft guide to scuba divemaster to ski patrol to bartender to even bush pilot. My advice would be before you even get the van to get your wilderness first responder (& possibly even EMT) and get an outdoors job for the coming summer. Develop outdoors skills, steadily pick up a few certifications and you can do some really awesome jobs. See if you like it, most companies have onsite housing (and will almost always let you park your van onsite for free for as long as you work there). If you dig it that life then yeah vanlifing might be for you. If you find yourself unhappy, unfulfilled and like you’re falling behind your peers back home it’s probably not. I won’t say one is better than the other, you gotta do you.

Is there a cost to being essentially homeless? Yes. It’s just harder to live and exist with no permanent fixed address. You can use your parents, but that might create massive tax headaches and not everyone has that option.

But ultimately man, it’s great. It’s certainly cheaper than home ownership and way more liberating than paying rent. You’ll meet great people and have great experiences. Just be aware that if you keep doing it well into your mid-thirties you will start to feel like you are building nothing. But if you’re young? No problems.
