Honestly hard to tell. Evos ALL rust out at this spot (rear frame rails, where the rear subframe/upper control arms attaches to the body). Other common spot is strut towers. You can tell whether it was winter driven by how the bolts look in the engine bay. The zinc plating and rustproofing on even 8/9s is pretty fucking bad.

Fuel Tanks also rust, and I think the 4s have a specific fuel tank. You'll find out when you try to change the fuel pump and twist off the seized nuts on the lockring for the pump housing.

Evos 4-6 specifically also rust out in the rear trunk pan/spare tire well, roof from the inside out.

Yeah 1997 4G63s are a matter of if not when. Made worse if it has a aftermarket clutch or mods. Those early Evo motors can't take more than 350whp too without bending a rod.

Another good observation. Lips will cost $400 for example. AYC pump would suck to replace unless you convert to a RS rear diff which might need a different driveshaft. Subframes are 4 specific too.

$20,000 is what it's worth. $20,000 also puts you in a lot of good cars in 2025. $15-23k puts you in a clean GDB STi or newer Mk7 Golf R/S3. $25k is the going rate for a driver-quality Evo 8 (look in the West Coast for a good example, Cali is a treasure trove of clean stockish Evos) or a early VB WRX/GR86. And $35k puts you in a GR Corolla which drives 90% like a Evo in the good ways, but you can daily drive it and it won't feel like a POS when you're stuck in traffic/in a drive thru/commuting.

I personally like Subarus more, they're less reliable/more fragile but Evo prices are stratospheric. $2-5000 can still get you a clean shell while a Evo shell is $8000-15,000. $15-20k can put you in one with a built motor in mint shape, and the 05-07 GDBs were awesome cars back then.
