Even after a walk of the 'course' it still takes 1-2 runs to get a feel for it, you decide whether each should be late apex or a sacrifice corner or where you need to trail brake yadda yadda. And that's fine, but you only get 3-4 runs and I never came out of it feeling like I could even try my best because I was focused on a sea of orange cones in stead of driving. I drove in FSAE at the same time, I can handle it, but a track is different and IMO closer to street driving.
On a track you can see the edges, you know where the apex is, you look at the curvature and banking of a turn and instinctively know how to approach it at least on a basic level, with cones it's guesswork the first lap. It's a waste of my time when I could be hitting corners at full throttle on the street for free without standing around for 5 hours.
I drive cars for fun, not as a competition. Open track days are amazing, but they're harder to get into than ever.
