A GT40 kit would've needed less modifications, as the MK II variant was already designed for engines like the 454 anyway. not that being "difficult to modify" is a deciding factor for a formula one constructor who's engineers can make pigs fly.

"seemed" makes this an arbitrary personal matter, not a financial one. plus, even the most expensive GT40 kit is cheaper than a Testarossa. Mclaren themselves also had no problem using Ferrari (pic related).
