>guy says “excuse me” as if he’s trying to walk past me
>turn to tell whatever weirdo is trying to watch me pee to fuck off
>all I say is “dude” as I look sideways and over my shoulder and realize there’s no one there (because of fucking course there isn’t, right?)
>existential dread
>hike the other 15 miles back to the car without really stopping
>didnt bother to filter water, snacked while walking, no pics, no bullshit
I heard it clear as day. This wasn’t some newb “scared of the woods” thing. It wasn’t the wind rubbing one tree against another or a bird rustling around in a bush. This was human speech.

The scariest part was when the sun was getting low as I approached my car. It wasn’t the lack of sunlight that scared me, but the dread that something might happen with the car. It was my lifeline, but what if it didn’t start? What if it was stuck in the mud? What if I had flat?

I had also never been so scared for so long. It was hours, and the entire time I felt like I was running from something. That was probably in my mind; I didn’t see anything chasing me. But it sure felt like it.
