Because designers constantly fuck things up. They had a few home runs but most designers to ever live made products worse. If western designers touched the sony a1, they'd halve the battery size or it would lose a lot of video features or IBIS to turning the battery sideways to reduce the grip, and they'd demand a deeper mount closer to M mount spec to make the lenses more proportioned, resulting in not enough room for the optics engineers to make better quality lenses than leica, and probably slim down the body overall by removing heatsinks and IBIS if it were still in there.

Right now, designers are still very influential in the car industry and they are very much fucking things up because designers does not mean the few good design home runs that existed 50 years ago. They're just like "art photographers" today, 99% absolute morons. Designers are why american trucks blind everyone else for example. They were meant to put the headlights lower like when engineers designed trucks, but design principles wouldn't allow it. Designers are why parts are getting harder to replace without removing half the bodywork. Design trends over reason.

It's most likely that sony actually gave a designer some input, which is why they are a bit more fashionable but aren't blobs like aids victims and arthritic canon boomers need them to be. Canon is a great example of a company where an engineer does all the design. Nikon hired a designer once, people like canon more. Sony, olympus, and fuji are clearly cowtowing to designfaggots even today. Designers could be why sony had so many problems with weather sealing and fuji still has them today.
