Is a micro four thirds good enough for a road trip camera? I want a camera that can take good photos, especially at night, the sky, and landscapes and documenting.
I currently have an EM 1-III, but I keep wondering if it's actually good enough, and it is, and I'm just being taken for a ride with gear autism, or if it is actually shit
I really, REALLY, want an "always carry" camera that can do anything, in any weather

/vid/ - Video General
vidgen i can go lower
At least 3 more months before ai takes our jobs edition

All video related questions and discussion is intended for this thread. Here we discuss techniques, gear and anything else related to capturing video footage. Please don't pretend to be an expert if you don't know what you're talking about. Kindly leave your ego at the door.
Posting short films/scripts or other work you've done is encouraged.
We tend to use and recommend DSLRs/mirrorless cameras because they provide phenomenal picture quality for their price, have large sensors (ie the same size used in high-end cinema cameras and higher) and have interchangeable lenses.
In contrast, consumer camcorders often have much smaller sensors and a fixed lens.

Quick FAQS
>what’s the best camera available on a “budget”?
The blackmagic pocket cinema camera 4k, or the Panasonic gh5 (can pick one up for like 500 bucks atm)
>what’s a good beginner video camera?
Anything that works, shoots at least 1080p and preferably has interchangeable lenses. Any recommendation beyond that will cause arguments so read the fucking sticky if that isn't satisfactory.
>What's a good sound solution that won't break the bank?
Zoom h1
>Can I use a zoom lens for video?
Yes
>Do I need cine lenses?
No
>Do I need 4k?
No. 1080 looks great on a cinema screen. 4k looks better.
>Can someone tell me if my video is any good?
Yes, but be prepared to receive harsh criticism. If you're going to waste 5 minutes of our time with a shitty out-of-focus montage of nothing then we'll tell you that it's crap
>Is it okay to dox myself?
...Personally I wouldn't but what do I know?

Because I didn't see one and am an endless fountain of dumbshit questions.

Because I'm poor, I have to use an old phone and camera attachment as my regular use camera. But I can't use it on a tripod because the holder blocks half my screen.

Are there any good screen viewer or remote shutter apps for Android that aren't littered with ads?

Right now I have to use TeamViewer, which requires me to hotspot this phone for my camera phone, and manually authenticate the connection every single time, and which closes after five minutes.

How does /p/ feel about zines?

They seem fun. You print your stuff, distribute it however you want, and people look at it. They might toss it in the trash but at least you made an impression.

You can make them for pretty cheap. I made some lo-fi DIY-style ones with my visual art at home using just an inkjet printer, and I've been dropping them in random places for people to find.

Anyone ever make zines?

What cameras would you recommend, that fit on a pocket and have better image quality than Iphones?

I will be using it mostly for printing photos to place on memory albuns, and maybe like 1 or 2 profile photos...I have a thing that I hate when the eyes are out of focus or blurry in photos, so I think portrait capacity would be important.

Preferably if it's under 600 used and if it has interchangeable lens, even better

OM-1 vs K-1ii:
om-1 vs k1ii
I've spent about 2 years shooting with a beat up canon 70d I got on craigslist and I'm ready to drop some money on a new camera. I've narrowed my choices down to these two because of the following:

- Rugged and actually weather sealed
- I like the build quality, feel and color rendering of the lenses (HD pentax D-FAs and the OM pro f/2.8s)
- Comfortably in my budget used (with lenses)

I'm leaning more towards the OM because I will be backpacking a lot and the weight savings are attractive (especially with telephoto), however I'm willing to put up with the weight if the pentax will have outstandingly better image quality.

My use-case will be travel with a bit of wildlife photography, I will shoot everything in RAW and edit, and all of my photos will be shared online or printed to a max of 11x17". I also never carry a tripod/monopod.

Some of my pros for each system:
OM-1
>lightweight and compact
>m43 wider DOF
>more variety of modern glass
>cheaper telephoto options

K-1ii
>higher resolution (can crop for wildlife)
>better dynamic range and color depth
>better in low light?

I'm sure everyone will tell me to go full frame and go to the gym but I was hoping to get some additional perspective, ideally from someone who has owned both FF and modern m43.

Some additional points:
-I know they are both dead systems
-No I will not get a canon/nikon/sony

Thanks for your time

sup /p/
I've started a new project documenting junkyard and pick-n-pulls in my area! I went to one as a kid a bunch of years ago and ever since have been dying to go back. I find them really interesting, its an environment you really never get to experience. Its sort of surreal seeing all the old cars ripped apart, and having free reign to do basically whatever you want to them (as long as you pay) is sort of freeing? I'm also a big car nerd to its fun trying to find interesting cars or just seeing how they work.
Anyways, I intend to visit these places and document not only the environments but also the people. I think eventually I'd love to do portraits of the workers, especially with their tools. Last time I went I was too nervous to ask anyone so maybe if you have any tips on asking strangers, especially while theyre working, for photos that would be great.
I hope you enjoy these photos and maybe they will inspire you or something. If this isn't your thing, then just pass on by.
Thanks!

I've been photographing for just two years and I always used f/4 lenses (I shoot Canon) and never felt like I needed something like f/2.8 as I can just either use a tripod or increase the ISO.

worth getting a DSLR lens for a mirrorless system?
nikon f
I've been looking to get a fast telephoto (Nikon) without breaking the bank and as everyone slowly moves to the new mirrorless platforms the prices for DSLR lenses are 30% of their original

I would assume there wouldn't be too much of a deterioration in optical quality from the use of an FTZ adapter as it's really just a spacer to match the original DSLR focus plane

I would also likely have a teleconverter for more reach as needed in front of the FTZ which I think shouldn't pose any more drawbacks than with the original DSLR

my main question is if there's any major advantages to getting a native mirrorless knowing it's going to cost 3x more and lose half it's value as soon as it's bought

there's currently a local seller listing the 300mm f/2.8G VR II for $2,000 USD (currently $5,500 USD new) which could probably be knocked down a bit further

Take A Sea of Steps for instance, I'm reading this primer and it says:
>"Remarkable for its composition and sense of light and space, the photograph conveys the climbing up the stairs, as if analogous to ascending toward the divine serenity symbolized by the illuminated archway"
>"he vertical lines of the columns rise out of the curve of the steps that seem to flow and swell like ocean waves; what Evans' called "a sea of steps."

B&W
48324892343928298
Do you ever find yourself resorting to B&W when you can't salvage the colors in a picture due to light?

The best example I can think of is outdoor photo shoots. I see plenty of photographers who either due to bad luck or retardation end up doing photo shoots in very boring/unflattering natural light which results in very bad looking pictures, in which there isn't much to do to salvage it. I really don't have a clue as to what the average person thinks of B&W, there must be a reason as to why these photographers would rather post their poorly lit and edited pictures instead of just removing that variable entirely. Thoughts? How can one avoid this problem if you want to shoot with natural light? Is it just luck?

Hello anons! You might remember me from >>4425207 a while back. I have since set up some very neat desktop servers (both Synology) and I thought other anons may find this information useful.

For the storage of highly important and personal stuff, I ended up picking a "DS620slim" filled with SSDs (for low-noise and compactness). With 6x 4TB drives in RAID6, I have 16 TB (14.5 TiB) to work with which can be easily mirrored onto a "portable" external HDD. For the time being, I'm using an 8TB portable SSD and a 16TB external HDD as backups. The HDD is powered off for most of the time to reduce noise, and the portable SSD is used as the "off-site" backup (easily accessible, travels with me). Eventually, I'll need a 16TB SSD as the amount of data stored increases, but unfortunately there are no well-tested consumer products with that capacity in current year. If I end up needing more space for backups, I'll probably just use two 8TB portable SSDs.

Additionally, I've also built a much larger HDD array for a lot of the "bulky" data I work with (non-p) that I'd like to be stored more reliably. I'm still a bit unsure about how I'll handle the backups for those: I plan on getting a magnetic tape drive to properly back up this data, but I also want to keep a third centralized copy somehow. Any suggestions? I suppose I could pay money for "cloud" storage, but at that point, I suspect it'd be more cost-effective to simply built a second server at another location and mirror the data. Currently the server functions as a "backup" for a bunch of DAS, so it's not the only copy.

The whole process of setting these things up was surprisingly user-friendly. I feel a little silly for being intimidated by it. My main gripe is that Synology's DSM (server OS) gets upset when you use "off-brand" drives (i.e. not "Synology" brand), so I had to use a script to disable the stupid warnings that the server spits out. Otherwise, a very handy solution. Thanks for all of your advice, anons.

Is Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark II good?
Olithica_2020_082_550x
Hello, I'm a tourist here and I'm looking for a good camera to take good general personal family photos with (portraits, travel landscape, city, etc)...

This Olympus caught my eye, as well as the sony a6000 (which seems to have better quality images).

I want a good, low budget camera that can blow any phone camera away, and bonus if it's small.

Other than that, I'll be printing most of my images to get them in my personal memories album

Why did body driven AF die?
file
Why do nearly all modern camera systems use AF motors integrated into the lens? One would think it makes more sense to have one good autofocus motor in the body that each of your lenses can use. Moreover, whenever you upgrade your body, every lens you own gets an autofocus upgrade.
Was it a result of Canon dominating the DSLR era, since EF had lens motor AF only, or are there technical problems that couldn't be solved?

White balance vs color grading
800T_edited
What is the difference between "wrong white balance" and color grading?

I'm not picking on this guy or trying to make a point about leaving analog colors untouched. But you can clearly see that him fixing the white balance of 800T ruined all the mood. On the other hand you can clearly see that picleft does not look like one of these insanely well colorgraded pics?

So what gives?

using expensive film
1282875352706
What's the point of using expensive film, if you're going to digitally scan it and color correct it in post? Is it just for the grain size?

So you get film's color science, then slap digital filter from camera/scanner, then you tweak this again to your liking?

Why not just use cheapest possible film if you're post processing anyway?

Capture One Pro: Worth it?
c1pro
Doing a large outdoor shoot across 2 days with 180+ deliverable shots to a client. I've been using a mix of Adobe and other tools but it is time consuming matching batches manually.

I saw that Capture One has both smart colour grading for outdoor weddings/editorials and also slider based retouching for detected faces now. It's $333 a year subscription. I want to know if it actually works well, or is just a gimmick. Is that actually worth it for anyone who uses C1Pro here?

Most photography isn't art. But that doesn't matter, because it's able to do things art rarely can. Photography is a vial for a memory, it makes the intangible tangible. This feature is even more potent in black and white photography. Even more potent if there's some motion blur. So don't be sad your "snapshit" will never be art, be glad that you captured what your eyes could only see for a split second just for it to vanish into nonexistence. Advocates of cineslop say it's sculpting in time. Photography is making time meaningless, cutting right through it and spitting in the face of Chronos. That's why La Jetée is genius, beneath the superficial time travel argument lies the fact that photography is how we travel in time. It's how we make the fleeting eternal. Just think of how the accounts of deja vu phenomena skyrocketed after the introduction of photography, it literally pierces the matrix of time in the minds of those who experience it. I'm certain that if we one day gain the ability to control time, photography will be a huge part of that. Time is first and foremost about perception and only photography has what it takes to train the brain to be able to take charge and go from passive observer to being the one in control.

After being a loser social media hermit, I wanna make a flex instagram. You know, /fit/ pics, /fa/shion pics, /trv/el pics all of that. I don't really have a nice smartphone camera and I do not intend to get an iPhone either, but I do own a Nikon D5300 with a manual 50mm f/2, a kit 18-50mm and a 50-200mm. I also have a friend who's willing to take pictures for me in return for getting him into a new hobby that I know a fair bit about. Here's what I want to know
Tell me all about editing. Never done it before since I never intended anyone else to see my pictures. I downloaded GIMP and was thinking about pirating Lightroom but I want my pictures to use as less fakery as possible. Besides, that's the culture from what I can see
Is taking shirtless mirror pics with a DSLR too much? Like I said, I don't own a good phone
Should I be taking RAW pics? Always did jpeg but if I'm gonna edit may as well do RAW
When my friend is unavailable, how do I take pictures. I own a tripod but I don't think it's convenient to take pictures setting a timer and moving back and forth

DSLRs for Short Films

People thought a new revolution would occur in cinema with independent short films being easier than ever to make. But I hated learning photography on a DSLR, since many videos would come out with heaps of noise.
Do you think DSLRs even changed the world with its ability to make easy short films?

If you handle any amount of film-era camera gear you will almost always find a 135mm when buying somebody's old kit. It seems to me like it was the second most popular focal length after 50mm. So why is it that almost nobody cares about 135mm today?

Ive started taking photos with my phone but I want to get on the next level and I wanna buy a camera. I talked about it in another thread but I wanna make a thread cuz I need someone to convince me before I become a poser

I generally take photos of my life as much as possible but I also enjoy doing scenery, composite and symbolic photography. I'll post a few in this thread.

I am hyperautistic; I am basically a polymath and I usually compute every single event in my mind and mechanics behind, hence I rather have everything in full control if possible so I can play 4D chess. Mind the text cuz this will be my cope later.

I asked a few people, did some research and found Fuji X100V. Camera looked good and having dials of settings I like to change impressed me. After some more research I found that Fuji was on the way to become a nostalgia/poser bait. I dont really mind that but I want my moneys worth.

I can always buy a dslr but I want a compact daily WITH viewfinder and that disqualified a lot of cameras. My only alternative is a Nikon zfc but I find it big.

Now anon, Ive set my mind into X100 but I still feel uneasy so please try to convince me into not buying it as if I am using taxpayer money, cheers.

cleaning dust
ust
A friend decided I could make use of her camera better than her (EOS2000D, apparently it's dated) but I'm not into photography myself. I find it a bit interesting though. Anyways, I decided to give it a try and I noticed some dust in pictures (pic related). I know there's software that removes this easily, I know how to get around it with whatever software, but from what I can gather, this dust seems to be inside the lens itself.
Course it's her camera, I ain't gonna fuck with it. But is this lens kit cleaning a complicated process? I would imagine that since she didn't use the thing for long (I'm talking years) some dust might have gotten in there somehow.
