Photo Exercise
My friend 2025
I tried to go through all my photos, in the last years, and edit them down to 25 photos in one hour

I could've probably edited down to 10-15 but decided to keep the 25 as to present a wider palette as well as maybe show change in style during the years
1 hour really isn't much and so the order of presentation is random

What's your favourite type of filter, /p/?
I don't have any filters at the moment, but I'm interested in trying out a polarizing filter for sky backdrops and clearing up water, and maybe a graduated neutral density filter for girl in wheat field style pictures.
Please keep brand comparisons to a minimum. I think it's more interesting to talk about what a filter type enables you to do with a picture rather than which brand produces the best filter that will do that.

I really hate camera scanning. I've sunk 2k USD into my setup and it's technically near perfect. The output is stunning. The scans are sharp. The colours are accurate. But I just HATE IT. I miss my dedicated 35mm scanner. I miss the old ewaste hunk of plastic with all the temperament of an 25+ years old technology.
I also hate scanning with border but EVERYONE loves it. It's all so fucking gay. I hate film fags and I hate people who only like a photo because of muh borders and muh tonez and muh sovl. But if it's not on instagram then in feels like the works doesn't exist

What the fuck is a tariff edition

All video related questions and discussion is intended for this thread. Here we discuss techniques, gear and anything else related to capturing video footage. Please don't pretend to be an expert if you don't know what you're talking about. Kindly leave your ego at the door.
Posting short films/scripts or other work you've done is encouraged.
We tend to use and recommend DSLRs/mirrorless cameras because they provide phenomenal picture quality for their price, have large sensors (ie the same size used in high-end cinema cameras and higher) and have interchangeable lenses.
In contrast, consumer camcorders often have much smaller sensors and a fixed lens.

Quick FAQS
>what’s the best camera available on a “budget”?
The blackmagic pocket cinema camera 4k, or the Panasonic gh5 (can pick one up for like 500 bucks atm)
>what’s a good beginner video camera?
Anything that works, shoots at least 1080p and preferably has interchangeable lenses. Any recommendation beyond that will cause arguments so read the fucking sticky if that isn't satisfactory.
>What's a good sound solution that won't break the bank?
Zoom h1
>Can I use a zoom lens for video?
Yes
>Do I need cine lenses?
No
>Do I need 4k?
No. 1080 looks great on a cinema screen. 4k looks better.
>Can someone tell me if my video is any good?
Yes, but be prepared to receive harsh criticism. If you're going to waste 5 minutes of our time with a shitty out-of-focus montage of nothing then we'll tell you that it's crap
>Is it okay to dox myself?
...Personally I wouldn't but what do I know?

1. Macro is based
2. Anything lower than f/16 is useless, anything over f/8 causes diffraction (we don't care)
3. Get a flash of some kind if you're doing handheld macro, get a softbox if your lighting is too harsh (it is)
4. 1x magnification can be overkill. Nobody cares if you hit 1x or greater, if it's framed like shit
5. 200mm for bugs, 100mm for all-purpose, lower focal lengths are memes
6. Extension tubes are cheap enough to dabble. Stick them on something between 50-200mm and go to town
7. Gear posts are allowed but keep it on topic
8. Any macro is encouraged. Bugs, plants, textures, minis etc. all welcome

What happened to camera ergonomics? Of course no one is asking to make cameras needlessly heavy, but with normal to large hands, you can't hold the new cameras comfortably without adding a grip.

Nikon lens with unique rendering
Comparison
So I recently swapped from Sony to Nikon for the manual focus features and better weather sealing and I was looking for a 35mm AF lens to compliment my Voigtlander glass. I initially was looking at getting the Nikon 35mm F1.8 S but I found the images to be really flat and clinical in a way that was off putting. After reading some forums people were suggesting that the Nikon 35mm F1.4 had a much more interesting rendering and I was surprised to see that in addition to being faster it was also cheaper. The images had a lot more pop to them as well and I think the focus fall off looked nicer. I have not really found charts that useful for determining what lens I will like and usually I think digital's sharpness is a hindrance for many types of photography. I was considering getting the Nikon 105mm f2.5 but was hoping they would make a native Z mount one eventually. Are there any other lenses with unique rendering or other interesting characteristics that /p/ would recommend for Nikon Z adapted or otherwise?

Why does it suck?
Ren Cockwell
Why does carrying around a camera suck so much? Am I doing something wrong?
The problem I have is that the camera is always this irritating foreign object dangling from my body. When I carry it over my shoulder, it keeps swinging around, annoying the fuck out of me. If I shorten the strap so it's less annoying, suddenly it's so short that I can only hold it, like, four inches from my face, which is even more annoying. What the hell do I do? Just use pocket cameras like my GR II? Anything I have to carry on a strap literally gives me high blood pressure from how irritating it is while walking around.

How does p store their photos (analog and digital)?
Do you keep your film in humidors? Do you put stuff in the freezer? Cloud storage?
All of my photos are digital and sit on my computer. I don't keep images/backups, but I do make multiple mirrors every once in a while and keep them in different locations (both flash and hard disks). I'd like to set up something more resilient and less involved, like a home server with a disk array, but I feel very intimidated by the task. What's a good place for me to start?

Most photography isn't art. But that doesn't matter, because it's able to do things art rarely can. Photography is a vial for a memory, it makes the intangible tangible. This feature is even more potent in black and white photography. Even more potent if there's some motion blur. So don't be sad your "snapshit" will never be art, be glad that you captured what your eyes could only see for a split second just for it to vanish into nonexistence. Advocates of cineslop say it's sculpting in time. Photography is making time meaningless, cutting right through it and spitting in the face of Chronos. That's why La Jetée is genius, beneath the superficial time travel argument lies the fact that photography is how we travel in time. It's how we make the fleeting eternal. Just think of how the accounts of deja vu phenomena skyrocketed after the introduction of photography, it literally pierces the matrix of time in the minds of those who experience it. I'm certain that if we one day gain the ability to control time, photography will be a huge part of that. Time is first and foremost about perception and only photography has what it takes to train the brain to be able to take charge and go from passive observer to being the one in control.

i'm thinking of getting the 400ft Kodak 250D roll but i am not sure how to handle it.
I did use lots of bulk film and bulk loaded 100ft only until now.
I thought of rolling it down on a spool (approximately 100ft) and put the original roll back in safe place.
I was also asking myself, does the remjet actually fall off the film that could land inside my camera ?
My plan was to shoot alot then use baking soda or whatever the new trick is and develop
in patches.
will appreciate any advice thank's !

White balance vs color grading
800T_edited
What is the difference between "wrong white balance" and color grading?

I'm not picking on this guy or trying to make a point about leaving analog colors untouched. But you can clearly see that him fixing the white balance of 800T ruined all the mood. On the other hand you can clearly see that picleft does not look like one of these insanely well colorgraded pics?

So what gives?

1717403299823917
I made a custom Gemini that is designed to analyze photography from a neutral perspective.

Every single photo that I put into it gets a 4.5-5.5/10. If I don't use the rule of thirds, it bitches about me not using the rule of thirds. If I do use the rule of thirds, it conveniently doesn't even mention it.

I don't think AI is truly capable of critiquing a photograph in the same way that a human is, but it's really the only way I can get actual feedback on my photos. I do worry about refining my style in the wrong way; attempting to appease the AI instead of just doing what I like.

Does anyone else do this?

Looking at buying one of these for a photography uni project. I’m majoring in design and have absolutely no clue how to use a film camera. Would it be easy for a moon like me to get used to it in a week to make a photo book with? What should I be cautious of?

What's the point of this type of posing/facial expressions (pic rel)? It's common on social media and, as far as I know, mainly among women. I guess its origin is in the modelling industry. Well what is it trying to convey? To me it comes across as completely devoid of any emotion and consequently purposeless and pretentious.

Was thinking of buying one for video and some street photography. Which one is your favorite? And what strength did you go for?

I'm thinking Tiffen Glimmerglass at 1/4 or 1/2 to blow out some light sources and make the footage look more filmic, without it being obvious there is a filter involved.

Monetizing the hobby
1727137397222968
tl;dr - I got back into photography and some friends/old acquaintances are starting to request photoshoots, but I don't know how to effectively monetize it without being a dick.

I casually enjoyed taking photos in my childhood, but I really started doing it as a primary hobby in the mid-2010s, and I ended up becoming the go-to guy for (mostly paid) photography and album artwork in my region's tiny underground rap scene.

I tried to turn it into a business, but got burned out after shooting some super cheap weddings and developing a massive imposter syndrome in the process.

The music scene died out because everyone got old and started families, so I started shooting more empty spaces. Then after realizing that I had shot everything interesting in my region and falling into a severe, prolonged mental health crisis, I stopped shooting altogether for 3 years.

I recently picked my dusty Canon 6D back up and fell in love with photography again. Then, some of the connections that I had made through that scene started contacting me asking for photos.

I did two shoots for free because those people were actual friends, and I didn't trust myself enough to charge money for them. That imposter syndrome came back roaring again.

How the fuck does one get over that? I enjoy taking photos, but I'm not a reddit mod. I don't want to do it for free, especially if my services are actually growing in demand again, but the blurred line between "friends" and "clients" is hard to discern sometimes.

Any advice?

Hi /p/eople, it's nice to see you there!
I was wondering about a few things. What impact had the site outage on your habits? Did it help you to realise something, photography or life related?

For me, even if I despise gear threads, I always loved this place for the honest critic ant input I received here. I don't know any other forum like this one, so I was pretty aimless during the maintenance. We're a pretty dysfunctional community, but we are one nonetheless.

So, how was it for you?

Sharpness
IMG_0110
When is a picture sharp? I really dont know if my images are sharp and its making me angry. My lenses should be quite accurate and I have found f/9 to get me the sharpest focus on my subject, but for some reason I am still unsure once the pictures have been uploaded to my PC.

For darktable users here, at what zoom percentage is unsharp for you? I start having an sharpness issues at 150%-200% zoomed in. I have never been able to pixel peep at 400%.
Also when checking for sharpness do you look at the RAW or the JPG in post processing? When I toggle focus peaking usually the jpg has more highlighted areas, maybe due to compression, not sure.

I am using a Canon 90D with Sigma and Tamron lenses.
Lastly, I am also using high iso noise reduction on the 90D having always thought it would benefit me, but look at my camera LCD on pictures taken with and without this setting on a tripod at 100 ISO it seems this setting slightly effects the picture at 100 ISO making the grass in the distance not as pointy/ prominent as I would like it.

Here an example with birds SOOC and uploaded in original to filebin:

I'm trying to seriously learn about photography as art, and I'm reading, but I just don't get it
Take A Sea of Steps for instance, I'm reading this primer and it says:
>"Remarkable for its composition and sense of light and space, the photograph conveys the climbing up the stairs, as if analogous to ascending toward the divine serenity symbolized by the illuminated archway"
>"he vertical lines of the columns rise out of the curve of the steps that seem to flow and swell like ocean waves; what Evans' called "a sea of steps."
Like, I don't get it. I just don't get composition, what they mean by form and structure, I DON'T GET IT

Im planning to start a fine art project.
I have a few rgb lights and stands and I am going to setup a small scene in my house at night with the coloured lights and photograph it on a film camera with long exposure, then maybe move some stuff to get trippy effects.

I feel like thats 70% of it figured out, but I am not sure how I elevate it into art.

I dont understand how artists get some vision to say? how do you come up with a message or whatever that part is called?

Have you noticed how the world has become bland and colorless? You are not crazy it has been a trend for the last few decades. Things like cars have gone from dozens of different colors many bright and vibrant down to just a few colors like black, grey, and tan. Just another way to keep us in a low vibrational state. When you live in a bland colorless world it’s easier to keep you uninspired and more submissive.

Nobody Cares.
itsover
pic rel is the youtube channel of Joel Haver, who got popular on youtube making short films (~4-15min). He has over 2 million subscribers and has videos will millions of views. About a year ago he decided to switch over to making feature length films, which as he has said over the years is his real dream and passion.

As a result his channel has died. He went from getting 500k+ views per video to being lucky to break 100k, with his 5 most recent videos having an average of like 43k views. Those numbers are objectively good. Having 40k people watch a movie you made is great, until you think about it. He one one of the most popular short film channels on youtube and an extremely well liked creator and the absolute best he's done is 225k views on "Anyone else but me". But more disturbingly, that one one of his first feature length movies he released, as time went on and the novelty wore off view counts have plummeted. My hunch is that those initial views were driven by his mainstream audience, who all disappeared because no one actually cares to engage with things you make if they actually require any dedication to engage with, even if you're a very popular video creator. It means that if the art you're producing doesn't conform to the short-form, digestible, hellscape then you're fucked. No one will watch it, nobody cares. It's doubly worse for photography, which is a medium normal people don't even engage with unless it's porn. The era of niche personality cults after an artist has died is over, because it's now impossible for anyone to find your work online. It's buried by the algorithm. So unless you shoot film and keep your negatives, there is no hope you'll ever be discovered posthumously.

This is why I've decided to stop making art. Not because I won't get famous, but because art matters only in proportion to it's capacity to find it's audience with which it resonates. If your art is never seen by anyone except you, then it is reduced to meaninglessness.

Who's the worst Magnum Photographer of all time?

For me, it's Lua Ribeira. Her work is a solid 6. She has a few good photos, but it's surprising that she's part of the world's most prestigious agency.

https://www.magnumphotos.com/photographer/lua-ribeira/

The fact that Cristina de Middel, the current president of Magnum (also Spanish and likely a close friend of Ribeira), was involved in her selection is, at the very least, suspicious.

Dumping the better photos from my first visit to a track the other night. Was a semi-pro drift event one side of the track, and a group G motocycle session on the other.
Absolutely no part of this is intended to me some "le art"; it's action photography. It isn't everyone's cup of tea, but this board needs more photo threads.

All taken with a 100mm prime wide open (f/2.8) on a crop sensor, as it's my fastest telephoto
Everything is an OOC JPEG, but most have been cropped to a new ratio and had another minor sharpening pass.

I invite people to post their automotive, racing, or other car-related photography as well.
Also feel free to call me shit and why, just like my last thread.

Why does everyone simply ignore that street as a genre is a shambling corpse?

Classic street photography was based around the idea of capturing the small moments of life that happened on the streets.
>Because people used to just hang out outside on the street, not in their houses

I feel like this crucial aspect of the genre, that people just existed outside in the past, has been ignored and lead to a serious warping of the genre into something entirely different. Outside has become a liminal space. It's just the thing you have to do to get from inside one building to another, it's a necessary evil as far as most people are concerned and if they could simply teleport from inside one building to another, they would. Nobody wants to be outside in street photography anymore, they have to be and this has radically shifted the subject matter from people engaging in life, to simply walking through a crosswalk or holding an umbrella. There would be a place for the genre if it responded in a sane manner to this change, showing the isolation and desolation of modern existence, but in typical fashion, it tries to make it hyper-cinematic and grandiose, it becomes a lie.

Not sure where to ask, so I figured /p/ could help. It's about microphotpgraphy and microscopy, so I'm hoping it's on topic enough.

Any opinions on the Swift SW380B? I plan to get one with a 5 megapixel camera that goes in the eyepiece slot, and using it connected to my laptop or phone. I've used college lab microscopes for a couple years when I got my associate's degree, and I just want something for hobbyist use at home. I have no idea what brands I used in college, but I know this one has an abbe condenser. A camera that hooks to the phone/computer would make it cool too, never had that before.

Of course I'll be getting emission oil, dyes, and some accessories separately. I thought about getting the tripod version as well so a camera can hook in without interfering with the binoculars, but it's like an extra 100 bucks that doesn't seem like a huge change in convenience.

Makina 670 Help

Hey /p/, I have this Makina 670 and it’s great, but recently I have been having issues with it.
Not sure if it’s the camera or if these new Paterson reels are giving me a processing issue. Any advice? I don’t want to send it out for service if it’s simply a processing issue. I don’t think these are light leaks. They’re not uniform, and yesterday I processed a reel with no issues at all.
I don’t want to shoot chromes and have the roll be dogshit.

With smartphones getting better and better at photography, I'm wondering if point-and-shoot cameras are still worth buying. Pretty much everyone has a phone with a solid camera these days, so is there still a real advantage to carrying a dedicated compact camera?

Getting ready for the Oscars edition

Graffiti Photography
DSC05557
Any tips for graffiti or so called "street art" photography? Give me your harshest criticism.
I've started taking photographs only recently and I'm mainly interested in demons, usually in urban areas. Basically anything occult or disgusting. Poverty, prostitution, drug addicts, all that sort of stuff.
Other subjects such as buildings, landscapes, animals, etc, I don't find too difficult to frame although I'm still in the process of learning this new hobby.
But those graffiti ones, which I find are my favourite since the subjects are mostly being drawn by schizos and vendalists, are more difficult. They always come out dirty or messy to some degree, or maybe that's just in their nature.
I'll post some that were taken on Tel Aviv. I'm about to embark or a journey throughout Europe, where I'm told this phenomena is 20x worse than in here, and I want to be ready since my time over there is very limited.

Why is it like this? Why are the best photos on this board in /dst/? Every time I see a stellar composition with immaculate vibes and it makes me realize how bad I am at photography, it's always some dude using a point and shoot camera shooting jpgs?

In general it seems like there is a pattern that the more experienced someone gets with photography they gravitate towards gear with limitations and trade off control for ease of carry.

C Mount shenanigans
_SAM8625
Any one have any good C mount optics photos or experiences? These two cheapo optics have actually been pretty good. The CS mount, plastic body optic is surprisingly good for $12. On the wide end it has a pretty extreme vinette, on the telephoto side it actually covers a 1" sensor fine and is surprisingly sharp.

The Cosmicar TV lens has been through some shit, but is optically fine. Its actually amazingly good for something in that focal length. It does not cover a 1" sensor but the crops are still good.

Shoot black and white film and develop it yourself at home they said. You will save money.
OK boomer.
I just did the math today, I need $320 of equipment to do the developing, that classic old film camera that all the articles talk about being $20 are now all $300.
And yes the roll of film is $10 but I just spent $620 getting a camera and setup.

4 rolls of film per month at $10 each is $480 per year. O yeah also my developing chemicals only last one year so need replacing each year. So thats another $100 per year in the future to.

So in summary
year 1 costs $1100
year 2 costs $580 ($1680 total so far)
year 3 costs $580 each. ($2260 total so far).
and this just keeps on going and adding up.
All just to shoot 1 roll of 36 black and white photos per week.

Beware anons, their are no savings here whatsoever

Help

Looking for some help with old photos. Discovered that a large batch of old photos had become damp and ended up like this.
Is there any way to dry them and stop them sticking?

All the advice I can find online is for soaking them in water to seperate them if they are already stuck together.

How do we save photography and ourselves bros? Media has gone completely schizo and there is no way one single image of literally anything, not even hardcore porn can compete with what short form video has done to 99% of people's brains. The output of our hobby is decimated because of over-stimulation and information overload.

Is there anything that can be done? Do we have to all get into video ASAP and accept that stills are dead? Do we start writing on blogs again like it was 2012 to go with our photos? Walling off into Flickr did not work as that platform is even more dead than Instagram. We have some of the most realistic, smartest autists online on 4chan, I am sure we can come up with a logical practical solution.

>just shoot for yourself
>just print the photos and put them on your bedroom wall who cares lol
No, this is just cope. We all know it.
