Welcome to /p/ - Photography
1187770908945(l)
Go /p/ro:
• Please post images that are JPG format and ideally smaller than 1 MB, and/or about 1000 pixels on the longest side.
• Expect to be judged harshly. Learn to deal with it.

Want:
• We come here for photos, so post yours as often as possible, even if "image unrelated" to your text.
• "Flickr/500px/Tumblr/Facebook/Portfolio" threads are for critique and networking.
• Use "Recent Photos" threads if you are shy or only want to post a couple of photos.
• Shared raw files which we can collectively edit for discussion of post-processing techniques, are encouraged.
• Use the Catalog to consolidate similar topics (photographic themes, images or technical gear threads).

Do not want:
• Go to /wsr/ or /r/ for specific Photoshop requests.
• Gear threads are discouraged, but identified as necessary. Many users simply hide these threads.

I will be going to Japan in October. I wanted to buy a camera that's better than my phone and mostly record stuff. But I'm not knowledgeable about cameras at all.
What are some recommended cameras for beginners? I want something easy to use and easily maintainable. Something that just works and is known for being reliable.

Convince me I'm not an idiot before I spent 1700 Euros on this.
I quit photography for several years and sold my gear and one of the biggest reasons was I hated that I had to specifically go out to shoot because I didn't want to lug around my camera and several lenses. Thinking about it a compact camera like this one would be perfect to carry around more often than not. Am I thinking correctly? I need to have an outsider point of view on this.

1. Macro is based
2. Anything lower than f/16 is useless, anything over f/8 causes diffraction (we don't care)
3. Get a flash of some kind if you're doing handheld macro, get a softbox if your lighting is too harsh (it is)
4. 1x magnification can be overkill. Nobody cares if you hit 1x or greater, if it's framed like shit
5. 200mm for bugs, 100mm for all-purpose, lower focal lengths are memes
6. Extension tubes are cheap enough to dabble. Stick them on something between 50-200mm and go to town
7. Gear posts are allowed but keep it on topic
8. Any macro is encouraged. Bugs, plants, textures, minis etc. all welcome

>Negative film is shot 1 or 2 stops overexposed and then PULLED in development so that you build more density in the exposure and develop less such that the fog is limited

Somebody had to do it edition

All video related questions and discussion is intended for this thread. Here we discuss techniques, gear and anything else related to capturing video footage. Please don't pretend to be an expert if you don't know what you're talking about. Kindly leave your ego at the door.
Posting short films/scripts or other work you've done is encouraged.
We tend to use and recommend DSLRs/mirrorless cameras because they provide phenomenal picture quality for their price, have large sensors (ie the same size used in high-end cinema cameras and higher) and have interchangeable lenses.
In contrast, consumer camcorders often have much smaller sensors and a fixed lens.

Quick FAQS
>what’s the best camera available on a “budget”?
The blackmagic pocket cinema camera 4k, or the Panasonic gh5 (can pick one up for like 500 bucks atm)
>what’s a good beginner video camera?
Anything that works, shoots at least 1080p and preferably has interchangeable lenses. Any recommendation beyond that will cause arguments so read the fucking sticky if that isn't satisfactory.
>What's a good sound solution that won't break the bank?
Zoom h1
>Can I use a zoom lens for video?
Yes
>Do I need cine lenses?
No
>Do I need 4k?
No. 1080 looks great on a cinema screen. 4k looks better.
>Can someone tell me if my video is any good?
Yes, but be prepared to receive harsh criticism. If you're going to waste 5 minutes of our time with a shitty out-of-focus montage of nothing then we'll tell you that it's crap
>Is it okay to dox myself?
...Personally I wouldn't but what do I know?

>mfw when my canon sureshot I overpaid $40 for also has an f/2.8 lens and a manual ISO dial in 1/3rd stops from 50-400 (and 1,000 off on its own for some reason), meaning it literally does all the same shit for $40.
also why the fuck does it go from iso 50 to 400 in 1/3rd stops and then just randomly jump from 400 to 1,000 and not 800? did 1,000 speed film use to be popular?

Advice for nighttime photography
nighttime_photo
I've never done much night photography, now I'll be going on a trip and want to take some nighttime photos of the city, so we're talking reasonably bright cityscape.

I'm conflicted on what settings to use. I shoot film and will be using Portra 800. From what I've read it doesn't seem to make much sense to push process it, but feel free to opine on this.

I have a 50mm/1.4 which is my preferred option. I also have a 28mm/2.8 and a 100-300mm/5.6.
Can handheld pics come out good (tripod may not always be an option), and if so should I just use the 50mm wide open at 1/50 (or even try my luck at 1/30)?

If using a tripod, what would be my reference? Say I use the telephoto lens at f/8, what exposure time would I use, around a second?

I'd be really grateful for any examples as well, digital is fine even if you use higher ISO, I could still calculate it to 800 and see if I can open up wide enough.

Majority of the photos were shot with a Ricoh GR1 and the rest with a Nikon F100
C-41, E-6, and B&W all developed and """scanned""" at home with a D700.
Oh, and all my film was exposed multiple times I just don't know how many CT scanners (the ones that ruin your film) I encountered

Never paid much attention to Leica, but..
Leica_D-Lux8_flash
I was kinda surprised to see that the D-LUX 8 is just a rebadged Panasonic LX100M2 from 2018 with the only exception being that it has 1/2000 max shutter speed vs 1/4000 on the LX100M2 so in a way a slight downgrade.
Intredastingly Panasonic also just anounced the TZ99 which is just a rebadged TZ90 where they have removed the viewfinder and added a tilt-screen and swapped the micro usb port for a usb-c one.

How easy is it to get a white background like this? Is this literally just something like this https://www.amazon.com/GFCC-Polyester-Photography-Background-Graduation/dp/B07FXJN5L1 ? Anything I should know if I want a very similar texture to pic related? I'll be shooting this in my room (moving my bed out). I have a large window on one side and a wall on the other. Would it be best to block natural light with blackout curtains and instead focus on actual professional lights?

Lastly what makes this picture so good beyond the subject? Is it all post processing? Pic related just seems so detailed. It's really cool.

Im a beginner and looking to shoot some promo images. Photographers in my area have been pissing me off so I'm just going to do this myself. I have a unlimited budget (not actually, but I can invest big if I can get something cool). I'll be using a Canon R8 with a Canon RF35mm. In the end I'll probably just experiment, but some low hanging fruit tips are appreciated.

I got myself a used DSLR with a few lenses a few days ago. It's a Canon EOS 700D. One of the lenses is the EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM. The lens works fine in AF but when turned to MF it does nothing when turning the focus ring. Did I miss something or is the lens just broken?

Never upgrade to your dream camera. Always stay on the camera that was previously your dream camera.

Why? 1. So you it’s only half a bummer when you break it. At least you can look forward to upgrade to

I got my 5dmk4 when my 5dmk3 accidentally fell from the ship into the atlantic ocean. I will upgrade to the gfx100ii when Fagyfilm or Snoy release the first camera with the 247mp sensor or when my 5dmk4 breaks

/vid/ - Video General
vid gen scream
2025 is here edition

I made a shutter speed tester
1420340826
It's essentially a copy of the PhotoPlug that doesn't cost €35, it plugs into your phone's 3.5mm jack and masquerades as a microphone while using an app called Shutter-Speed. I'll show you how to make it for less than $10:

What you'll need:
BPX38: https://a.aliexpress.com/_ooNVS3N
3.5mm male 4-pole (TRRS): https://a.aliexpress.com/_okCBOkR
4.7k ohm resistor: https://a.aliexpress.com/_oCb7WGP

Instructions:
Step 1: Take the 3.5mm plug and bridge the sleeve (mic) and ring (ground) next to it with your 4.7k resistor.
Step 2: Your phototransistor has an emitter, base, and collector lead. Snip off the base.
Step 3: Solder the BPX38 in parallel to the resistor. Make sure the emitter is connected to the ring, and that the collector is connected to the sleeve.
Step 4: Cut off the cable strain reliever and screw the plastic cover back on.

There ya go, enjoy not having to worry about exposure guesswork with your mechanical film cameras anymore.

How did film directors/cinematographers control their color palette during filming? How much of it was done in post/printing?
I've just started with film photography and am fascinated by how differently colors are rendered on film compared to digital
Did they shoot stills with the film stock during pre production to check the color rendering?
Are there any good books on the subject?

The film aesthetic needs to die already.
fuck_film
For decades boomers held back the evolution of photography. Now hipsters have joined them. Today modern digital cameras are still designed as if it was 1995. Billions of dollars over the past 30 years has been wasted by corporations designing digital cameras around designs of 1950s film clunkers. The world of photography should have moved on from film and its janky designs twenty five years ago. Cellphone companies certainty figured this out. Now they are eating camera companies alive. How embarrassing.
Fuck retarded photographers and camera companies for not pulling their heads out of their ass. There is literally no rational reason to be using film today besides hipsters shitting themselves over bygone aesthetics. This is especially true since 99% of their shared film photos are DIGITALLY SCANNED AND UPLOADED TO THE INTERNET!!! There is certainly no reason for cameras to be be clunky monstrosities either besides boomers nostalgic for the past and retarded corporations catering to them. God damn, film and its antiquated designs still hounding photography. Film and its lingering stench need to die already.

Anybody know whos good in 2024/2025 that I should be studying in this genre? Instagrams, websites whatever. I am looking to get with the current look. Also glamour photography thread, any tips etc.

Current plan is to book a hotel room, shoot a few models with strobes to get the most value out of the location. Frequency separation retouch on the skin, build up an instagram, and once its rolling start charging the girls money.

There is this thing that happens in photography, (particularly in porn) where the magic veil of the medium is pierced and I realize that what I'm actually looking at is; a man paid a sex workers to take photos of her in a cheap hotel.

Why though? Why does the illusion hold sometimes but not others? I have the vague sense that it has something to do with the depth of field, but that's not all of it. I can't quite put my finger on what exactly causes it, but I've definitely experienced it quite a few times looking at photos. Any thoughts?

I really want to know because it is currently the major fear holding me back from doing shoots with women. I don't want this weird uncanny effect showing up

Can we have a thread on color grading and post?

I'm trying to find some LUTs to imitate fuji on v-log. I know luts aren't nearly as good as simulations, I just want some better color that the basic 1-tone garbage Luts that Panasonic provides: https://pro-av.panasonic.net/en/cinema_camera_varicam_eva/support/lut/index.html

I've seen some really good stuff but it's all in paid packs:
https://juanmelara.com.au/products/filmunlimited-flexible-film-emulation

https://johnrazalo.tv/products/classicprint-35mm-film-emulation-powergrade

https://www.tombolles.net/cineprint35

https://www.etsy.com/listing/1743130875/lut-fuji-3513-35mm-film-emulation

coming from /g/ and /ic/ these prices seem insane for basically messing around with the RGB curves function. My gut says there's a tutorial out there where I can get to 80-90% of this quality in a few hours on my own.

why is it specifically the all manual shit from the 70s that has the hipster tax? you can get pretty full feature cameras from the 80s and 90s that have the gay settings by wire shit like a pentax 645, canon sureshot or rebel 2000 for super cheap and all you have to deal with is the gay controls. even if they aren't serviceable/brick due to lol electronics, shit is still cheaper just to buy a new camera body. the only thing that is gay about them is they are ugly and you need to deal with shitty control by wire controls

Any APSC lenses that work on full frame without crop mode?

I was looking for a zoom lens that would be light and wide enough to vlog with, but the 12-24/16-35 2.8 are too big and heavy, and 14/1.4 and the 20/1.8 are as well, and don’t zoom.

I found that my SEL1018 just happens to project an image circle that covers most of the full frame sensor without crop mode, as a7siii sensor doesn’t allow it on video, and it works well 12-18mm with stabilization on.

Are there any other lenses known to work like this? I’ve read that the 55-210 can also work, but I can’t test it as I don’t own it.

Otherwise, any super light wide angles that can be used for vlogging? Weight and size take precedence over zoom capability if I had to choose one or the other.

How do we save photography and ourselves bros? Media has gone completely schizo and there is no way one single image of literally anything, not even hardcore porn can compete with what short form video has done to 99% of people's brains. The output of our hobby is decimated because of over-stimulation and information overload.

Is there anything that can be done? Do we have to all get into video ASAP and accept that stills are dead? Do we start writing on blogs again like it was 2012 to go with our photos? Walling off into Flickr did not work as that platform is even more dead than Instagram. We have some of the most realistic, smartest autists online on 4chan, I am sure we can come up with a logical practical solution.

I think we all can get a little self centered at times with our hobby and the photos we take. I thought this thread might be nice to dump shots, names or even Instagram links of photographers who are making it in 2024 for us to consider. New work helps us evolve. We don't need to see the same Daido Moriyama, Leibowitz and Adams shots over and over as inspo. There must be new photographers out there experimenting and being successful for it.

I am admittedly very ignorant about this myself. But I found this Spanish guy doing somewhat interesting "street" work, which I usually don't like: Joaquín Pastor Genzor

Retard here, I'm trying to fix up my camera settings so it stops being so fucking blurry in close-ups, which is something that's been plaguing it even in ideal lighting. Please bear in mind that I'm an amateur photographer.

I'm going to upload some photos directly. from my camera so the EXIF data should automatically transfer over. The first will be in "auto" mode and has a noticable red filter that idk how to get rid of, the second will be with "Easy Mode" turned on

Happy Shōgatsu! post pictures of the first sunrise of 2025, i want to see it!

i messed up. i thought sunrise time was when the sun started rising which was supposed to be 7:20 but it was already pretty much up by the time i was walking out the door at 7:18. at first i thought it was just early but now i think i just assumed the time giving by my weather app was the start not when it was already pretty much up.

forever beginner - redpill me on GEAR
0142daefe281436ec522c0f43efca04fb7115b83
I consider myself as a "forever beginner" because I had a photography phase when I dig myself a bit into it but not tooo much and finally gave up because I didn't like all that "seriousness" around the photography scene.

AND there was also the $$gear$$ issue

I've got a friend who works in a photo lab and invited me for a « gallery opening » in his lab, first time I attempted to such event. People were in awe in front of the photos but it irked me everytime I thought I could see how much money has been put behind the best pictures. Like they were SO clean, so perfect, so sharp... when I was in my enthusiast hobbyist phase I put all of my efforts on composition, good light and stuff. But I've got modest equipment and it saddens me to think that I will never be able to make a perfect picture even if I've got the perfect composition, subject and light, if I don't have the required gear for it.

Hence the redpill I'm looking for : without wanting to reach for a Hasselblad, how much money do we need to spend on gear to reach that acceptable level of "intrinsic" quality required to make a good to great picture ?

I hope you're getting my point, I only talk about digital photo btw BUT am open to discover film I think, though I don't want to fall into the gear rabbit hole because I know it's real and it's that kind of boring/serious things that discouraged to pursue my hobby. I don't want to make good snapshots, I want to take good pictures if I ever try it again.

I like to go hiking and take pictures of nature, and this does almost everything. It's the best macro lens out there for little critter shots and flowers, but being 105mm it still can get nice shots of birds and other animals, especially if you have 45mp. Don't have to fuss with any zoom and it's not big and heavy like a telephoto.

GOLDEN SPIRAL DESERVES RECOGNITION
spiral_and_thirds
If anyone who knows an Apple employee, or knows someone who knows an Apple employee, sees this, could you convince them to pitch the idea of adding the golden ratio to the camera settings? There is already a grid option for the rule of thirds, and I'm sure many people including myself would appreciate it. The golden ratio is mathematically complex and beautiful in its own right, an this makes it appear more attractive to the eyes.

Thank you very much, kind soul.

Is Wisconsin Death Trip kino?
1714017705_e3e2efe474_o
>Wisconsin Death Trip is a 1973 historical nonfiction book by Michael Lesy, originally published by Pantheon Books. It charts numerous sordid, tragic, and bizarre incidents that took place in and around Jackson County, Wisconsin between 1885 and 1900, primarily in the town of Black River Falls. The events are outlined through actual written historical documents—primarily articles published in the town newspaper—with additional narration by Lesy, as well as excerpts from works by Hamlin Garland, Sinclair Lewis, and Glenway Wescott, which thematically parallel the incidents depicted. The text is accompanied by contemporaneous photographs and portraits taken in Black River Falls by photographer Charles Van Schaick. Thematically, the book emphasizes the harsh aspects of Midwestern rural life under the pressures of crime, pestilence, mental illness, and urbanization.

>Wisconsin Death Trip developed a cult following in the years following its publication. In 1999, British filmmaker James Marsh adapted the book into a critically-acclaimed docudrama film of the same name. It was subsequently reprinted in 1991 by Anchor Books, and by the University of New Mexico Press in 2000.

Do any of you own a physical copy of this photobook?

Snoy A7SII horrible "hot" pixels
deadpixel
Sup /p/,
Just bought this A7sII off ebay for $650 with only 410 "shutter actuations" measured and like 5 spare batteries thinking it would be mint.
After inspecting it, it had some pretty heavy hotshoe usage and slight body grease stain from the grip area. I thought alright, not bad (could mean videos/long exposures were shot I think).
That is until I ended up turning on the camera and shooting some video at night to test how good it is at low light.
After shooting a couple videos I decide to check on my computer how the 4k quality is of a 2015 camera and it looked good until I noticed the color of the following red and blue hot/stuck pixels kept showing up along with one white one in the left.
The pixels "go-away" when taking pictures or when the camera is turned on after a night but I guess they turn white in pictures (see below)?

If anyone knows of a fix for this issue that isn't the month/pixel remapping one I can give them $ in compensation as I have to go to Italy in a few days and want to use it at night.
Btw this is the first time I hear of this phenomenon and already tried the sensor remapping fix of setting the month back and zilch.
Anything helps at this point

Artist Statement and Biography for Grants
WILLIAM MUMLER
I am thinking about applying to grants in photography but I don't know much about English or how to tell a "personal story". What is my biography? That I have shitposted on 4chan for 10 years after dropping out of university while doing photography on the side? The artist statements and biographies that I read are filled with buzzwords like communities, diversity, capitalism, indigenous, climate change, neo-liberalism and other virtue signalling bullshite. It really disgusts me. Nowhere they mention the fucking form or aesthetics. It's all just globohomo buzzwords and terms. Those statements read like a protest slogans rather than something an artist would say. They are plagued with utility. They don't think of art as end-in-itself. But as means to an end and most of the time it's just some political bullshit that they're seething about. Most of them sound like activists turned "photographers".

How can I write a short biography and statements which are actually human and convey artistic perspective? How do you write your biographies and artist statements?

Joined the big boys club today.

This thing feels like fucking wall-hacking the AF is just ridiculous it will see shit in the middle of pitch black dark and lock on to it with 30 year old AF-D lenses. I also grabbed a 70-200/2.8 VR II for cheap.

Talk Nikon stuff, share Nikon images, ask Nikon questions here.
