White balance vs color grading
800T_edited
What is the difference between "wrong white balance" and color grading?

I'm not picking on this guy or trying to make a point about leaving analog colors untouched. But you can clearly see that him fixing the white balance of 800T ruined all the mood. On the other hand you can clearly see that picleft does not look like one of these insanely well colorgraded pics?

So what gives?

All video related questions and discussion is intended for this thread. Here we discuss techniques, gear and anything else related to capturing video footage. Please don't pretend to be an expert if you don't know what you're talking about. Kindly leave your ego at the door.
Posting short films/scripts or other work you've done is encouraged.
We tend to use and recommend DSLRs/mirrorless cameras because they provide phenomenal picture quality for their price, have large sensors (ie the same size used in high-end cinema cameras and higher) and have interchangeable lenses.
In contrast, consumer camcorders often have much smaller sensors and a fixed lens.

Quick FAQS
>what’s the best camera available on a “budget”?
The blackmagic pocket cinema camera 4k, or the Panasonic gh5 (can pick one up for like 500 bucks atm)
>what’s a good beginner video camera?
Anything that works, shoots at least 1080p and preferably has interchangeable lenses. Any recommendation beyond that will cause arguments so read the fucking sticky if that isn't satisfactory.
>What's a good sound solution that won't break the bank?
Zoom h1
>Can I use a zoom lens for video?
Yes
>Do I need cine lenses?
No
>Do I need 4k?
No. 1080 looks great on a cinema screen. 4k looks better.
>Can someone tell me if my video is any good?
Yes, but be prepared to receive harsh criticism. If you're going to waste 5 minutes of our time with a shitty out-of-focus montage of nothing then we'll tell you that it's crap
>Is it okay to dox myself?
...Personally I wouldn't but what do I know?

I took this photo during a thunderstorm.

Miraculously, I managed to capture a lightning bolt.

But as my camera (on my phone) scans the image from right to left, this shot came out. Half of it is covered in lightning, and the other half only shows the lightning itself, but without the flash.

A friend told me it looks cool, so I'm sharing it with you.

I got the chance to go to South India last week, and figured it'd be a good time to try my hand at street photography. I typically shoot landscape, so this was my first real effort at using people as subjects. All of these were shot over the span of a two day guided tour, on a Sony a7c and a single 45mm f1.8 prime lens. Most of these were taken through a car window, since the majority of the trip was spent sitting in traffic, working, or dying of food poisoning. I tried to focus primarily on capturing what I thought were interesting subjects and compositions, but found myself taking and deleting lots of boring pictures simply because I wanted to capture everything that gave me culture shock. Critiques are very welcome.

I'm trying to seriously learn about photography as art, and I'm reading, but I just don't get it
Take A Sea of Steps for instance, I'm reading this primer and it says:
>"Remarkable for its composition and sense of light and space, the photograph conveys the climbing up the stairs, as if analogous to ascending toward the divine serenity symbolized by the illuminated archway"
>"he vertical lines of the columns rise out of the curve of the steps that seem to flow and swell like ocean waves; what Evans' called "a sea of steps."
Like, I don't get it. I just don't get composition, what they mean by form and structure, I DON'T GET IT

Capture One Pro: Worth it?

Doing a large outdoor shoot across 2 days with 180+ deliverable shots to a client. I've been using a mix of Adobe and other tools but it is time consuming matching batches manually.

I saw that Capture One has both smart colour grading for outdoor weddings/editorials and also slider based retouching for detected faces now. It's $333 a year subscription. I want to know if it actually works well, or is just a gimmick. Is that actually worth it for anyone who uses C1Pro here?

Terry Richardson returns
GrPQ0aOXwAAPRbV
BASED TERRY

>Eight years after major fashion brands and publications said they would no longer work with Terry Richardson, following a string of allegations of sexual misconduct made against the renowned fashion photographer, he now appears to be making a comeback.

>This week, the magazine Arena Homme+ unveiled its latest issue, featuring two covers shot by Richardson and an accompanying portfolio. One cover consists of an image of a toilet cubicle graffitied with the text “Punk rock ruined my life.” Another is a shot of a cardboard cutout of Donald Trump’s face.

>Entitled For David, from Terry, the images are billed as a tribute to the US film-maker David Lynch, who died in January.

>The fashion and identity commentator Caryn Franklin describes Richardson’s return to newsstands as disappointing. “I am questioning why we would allow this man back to do more of the same, since there was no reckoning, no accountability and no apology from him,” she says.

>Speaking to the Guardian over email, Ashley Heath, the owner and editorial director of Arena Homme+ and its sister title POP, said he wanted to make clear that “publishing this portfolio is in no way an attempt to rehabilitate Terry Richardson’s career as a commercial fashion photographer, as is being claimed.

>“The work is in no respects ‘fashion’ … The magazine includes much content that is not fashion, and has done for more than 30 years. Terry Richardson’s portfolio is a powerful, personal tribute to the late David Lynch. No more, no less. I believe it is great work and is profound at this particular point in time on a number of levels. I would urge anyone to look at the entire portfolio, especially if David Lynch means anything to you. He is certainly a hero to us at Arena Homme+.”

anybody here into ship photography? i've recently started shifting into it after spending most of my time shooting aircraft and airline scenes. it’s definitely a different vibe—going from runways and hangars to docks and open water. still figuring out how to handle the unique lighting challenges, especially in tighter quarters or below deck. grabbed a polarizer and a decent telephoto lens, which have both been super useful so far. still a lot to adapt to, but i’m enjoying the change.

B&W
48324892343928298
Do you ever find yourself resorting to B&W when you can't salvage the colors in a picture due to light?

The best example I can think of is outdoor photo shoots. I see plenty of photographers who either due to bad luck or retardation end up doing photo shoots in very boring/unflattering natural light which results in very bad looking pictures, in which there isn't much to do to salvage it. I really don't have a clue as to what the average person thinks of B&W, there must be a reason as to why these photographers would rather post their poorly lit and edited pictures instead of just removing that variable entirely. Thoughts? How can one avoid this problem if you want to shoot with natural light? Is it just luck?

Most photography isn't art. But that doesn't matter, because it's able to do things art rarely can. Photography is a vial for a memory, it makes the intangible tangible. This feature is even more potent in black and white photography. Even more potent if there's some motion blur. So don't be sad your "snapshit" will never be art, be glad that you captured what your eyes could only see for a split second just for it to vanish into nonexistence. Advocates of cineslop say it's sculpting in time. Photography is making time meaningless, cutting right through it and spitting in the face of Chronos. That's why La Jetée is genius, beneath the superficial time travel argument lies the fact that photography is how we travel in time. It's how we make the fleeting eternal. Just think of how the accounts of deja vu phenomena skyrocketed after the introduction of photography, it literally pierces the matrix of time in the minds of those who experience it. I'm certain that if we one day gain the ability to control time, photography will be a huge part of that. Time is first and foremost about perception and only photography has what it takes to train the brain to be able to take charge and go from passive observer to being the one in control.

1. Macro is based
2. Anything lower than f/16 is useless, anything over f/8 causes diffraction (we don't care)
3. Get a flash of some kind if you're doing handheld macro, get a softbox if your lighting is too harsh (it is)
4. 1x magnification can be overkill. Nobody cares if you hit 1x or greater, if it's framed like shit
5. 200mm for bugs, 100mm for all-purpose, lower focal lengths are memes
6. Extension tubes are cheap enough to dabble. Stick them on something between 50-200mm and go to town
7. Gear posts are allowed but keep it on topic
8. Any macro is encouraged. Bugs, plants, textures, minis etc. all welcome

If you handle any amount of film-era camera gear you will almost always find a 135mm when buying somebody's old kit. It seems to me like it was the second most popular focal length after 50mm. So why is it that almost nobody cares about 135mm today?

I'm not sure which camera to pick that would be :
1) bang for the buck(under $200 ideally, would go as high as $300)
2) wearable and discreet enough to film interactions and keep them natural
3) decent battery life(at the very very very least, 5 hours)
4) decent video quality
5) still able to operate with relatively low light (not extreme darkness per se, moreso like 10 PM in a urban area)

Any suggestions please?

What's your favourite type of filter, /p/?
I don't have any filters at the moment, but I'm interested in trying out a polarizing filter for sky backdrops and clearing up water, and maybe a graduated neutral density filter for girl in wheat field style pictures.
Please keep brand comparisons to a minimum. I think it's more interesting to talk about what a filter type enables you to do with a picture rather than which brand produces the best filter that will do that.

Hi /p/eople, it's nice to see you there!
I was wondering about a few things. What impact had the site outage on your habits? Did it help you to realise something, photography or life related?

For me, even if I despise gear threads, I always loved this place for the honest critic ant input I received here. I don't know any other forum like this one, so I was pretty aimless during the maintenance. We're a pretty dysfunctional community, but we are one nonetheless.

So, how was it for you?

I really hate camera scanning. I've sunk 2k USD into my setup and it's technically near perfect. The output is stunning. The scans are sharp. The colours are accurate. But I just HATE IT. I miss my dedicated 35mm scanner. I miss the old ewaste hunk of plastic with all the temperament of an 25+ years old technology.
I also hate scanning with border but EVERYONE loves it. It's all so fucking gay. I hate film fags and I hate people who only like a photo because of muh borders and muh tonez and muh sovl. But if it's not on instagram then in feels like the works doesn't exist

Running out of places to photograph
P5
I know this sounds stupid but does anyone ever feel like they run out of places to photograph around them? I might be falling for the trap of needing more and more exotic locations. Have you ever had to just appreciate the mundane shit again?

I live in south florida and the average location here is an 8 lane road with strip malls on each side which looks like shit. Or suburbs that can sometimes be ok but lots of time they're boring.

Why does it suck?
Ren Cockwell
Why does carrying around a camera suck so much? Am I doing something wrong?
The problem I have is that the camera is always this irritating foreign object dangling from my body. When I carry it over my shoulder, it keeps swinging around, annoying the fuck out of me. If I shorten the strap so it's less annoying, suddenly it's so short that I can only hold it, like, four inches from my face, which is even more annoying. What the hell do I do? Just use pocket cameras like my GR II? Anything I have to carry on a strap literally gives me high blood pressure from how irritating it is while walking around.

Shoot black and white film and develop it yourself at home they said. You will save money.
OK boomer.
I just did the math today, I need $320 of equipment to do the developing, that classic old film camera that all the articles talk about being $20 are now all $300.
And yes the roll of film is $10 but I just spent $620 getting a camera and setup.

4 rolls of film per month at $10 each is $480 per year. O yeah also my developing chemicals only last one year so need replacing each year. So thats another $100 per year in the future to.

So in summary
year 1 costs $1100
year 2 costs $580 ($1680 total so far)
year 3 costs $580 each. ($2260 total so far).
and this just keeps on going and adding up.
All just to shoot 1 roll of 36 black and white photos per week.

Beware anons, their are no savings here whatsoever

Super 8 film stock question, on a tight schedule
Anglia_Square_-car-park-8360-web
Anyone here got Super 8 experience? I'm in the UK, there's a historic brutalist complex in my city I love (think Ghost In The Shell 1995 / Akira) that's being closed up for demolition at the end of this week, and I want to get it on celluloid before it goes. I'm a poorfag so I've never been able to save up for a camera the past couple of years and then a Bauer C2A came up on Gumtree last night literally the next housing block over for only £15 cause the guy was getting rid of cupboard-loads of junk. There's an exposed roll in the camera already and he said "Oh you can just tape over it" so it think the low price may be cause he doesn't know it's worth ~£150 rather than that it's gonna turn out broken necessarily. Need to get some film stock ASAP but I need to know:

-My choice is between Ektachrome colour reversal, or Vision3 50D negative
-I want to use what I film in video art for the local art festivals, so I'd like to be able to project it, I'm not interested in digital scans except for posterity
-I also want to be able to make copies, which I'm aware will increase the cost

I've seen around that Ektachrome is poorer for making copies from, but is used for projection, whereas Vision3 50D isn't used for projection as it's a negative, it gets scanned digitally for use for whatever gimmicky reason? Is it true Vision3 50D and other common Super 8 negative film stock can only be used in the form of a digital scan nowadays or is it still feasible (with some extra £££) to get it developed into multiple copies for use as projections? The pieces I'm planning would involve 3 duplicate celluloid loops of the same material projected side by side, intentionally set out of sync. I'm a total noob and would like to spend more time researching but this place getting demolished & me being broke up til this month has me on a tight schedule now.

Nikon lens with unique rendering
Comparison
So I recently swapped from Sony to Nikon for the manual focus features and better weather sealing and I was looking for a 35mm AF lens to compliment my Voigtlander glass. I initially was looking at getting the Nikon 35mm F1.8 S but I found the images to be really flat and clinical in a way that was off putting. After reading some forums people were suggesting that the Nikon 35mm F1.4 had a much more interesting rendering and I was surprised to see that in addition to being faster it was also cheaper. The images had a lot more pop to them as well and I think the focus fall off looked nicer. I have not really found charts that useful for determining what lens I will like and usually I think digital's sharpness is a hindrance for many types of photography. I was considering getting the Nikon 105mm f2.5 but was hoping they would make a native Z mount one eventually. Are there any other lenses with unique rendering or other interesting characteristics that /p/ would recommend for Nikon Z adapted or otherwise?

C Mount shenanigans
_SAM8625
Any one have any good C mount optics photos or experiences? These two cheapo optics have actually been pretty good. The CS mount, plastic body optic is surprisingly good for $12. On the wide end it has a pretty extreme vinette, on the telephoto side it actually covers a 1" sensor fine and is surprisingly sharp.

The Cosmicar TV lens has been through some shit, but is optically fine. Its actually amazingly good for something in that focal length. It does not cover a 1" sensor but the crops are still good.

All of my photos are digital and sit on my computer. I don't keep images/backups, but I do make multiple mirrors every once in a while and keep them in different locations (both flash and hard disks).
