The truth is there's no right answer and it's just going to come down to your own preferences which you get through experience.
If someone's walking away or towards you, for any given aperture, the depth of field will be changing as well as how blurry the foreground and background get. How it will look changes at any given time.
If the person is large or in a costume, you might need to stop down more. If using a slower AF system, you might stop down more to allow a wider area for the subject to be in focus. If it's very poorly lit, you might want to use a wider aperture. If you're hiding a distracting background, wider aperture too.
You could have two 50mm lenses and want to use different apertures for both since they give a distinctly different look. You might have a lens where certain apertures are especially optimal, and others where it doesn't matter as much.

Instead of trying to learn specific settings like for a test, you want to learn about the thought process behind why you might use certain settings. It's like learning math by rote memorization instead grasping the concept of a formula. When you cant shoot, spend some time browsing flickr (or wherever), and check the settings used for images you like. You'll probably see a wide variety.
