According to people working in the field, it has. There's a mathematical roadblock that neural networks are not likely to bypass for a hundred years or more.
Neural Networks themselves are glorified algorithms, more than actual artificial intelligence. They automate low level intelligence-based work, and really shine at performing repetitive tasks without error, but a specialized human brain could blow a neural network out of the water at any advanced or abstract task.
Even with the advent of quantum computing, it will be a hundred years before you can get enough cubits to rival a human brain, and even then that's a big maybe.
The real future of computing and AI is in wetlabs, as the human brain is already a more capable computer than either binary or quantum AI's are likely to be in our lifetimes.
