because instead of investing an hour of labor into getting what they want, people would rather invest an hour into trying to steal it from someone else.
the material wealth being produced is steadily going down because everyone is just obsessed with stealing what little material wealth is still being produced, leading to more and more productive people going "fuck that" and either dropping it or leaving.
