I make $110k and don't have much money to left over after setting aside money for my mortgage, utilities, food, health insurance, medicine, taxes, 401k, car payments, teeth (have a around 3 and a half years left on a loan for the $54k my zirconia teeth cost plus I need to pay for cleanings of them every 6 months to keep the lifetime warranty on them so that if they ever break somehow or my gums get diseased and allow the implants to come loose that way or whatever else could go wrong I can get the repair / replacement work covered by that implant center), expenses for my cat like vet appointments / state required rabies shots / food / litter, and about a thousand dollars per month that I'm putting into an S&P 500 index fund so I have some investment earnings.
Granted I could just not invest any money, but that would be a very risky way to live if you're counting on social security alone to somehow cover your living expenses between age 60 and age 80. 20 years of elderly living in the future with inflation factored in won't be cheap.
