Yeah that's called feigning ignorance and shifting the blame. People dont joke about protecting their mate and being "insecure" isnt a personal quality or failing. Anyone who respects their partner will honor their wishes if they ask them not to do something that makes them uncomfortable.

Let me put it this way. Say she told you that she was afraid of dogs so then one day you bring home a pit bull that barks at her and scares the shit out of her then when she gets mad at you, your response is "gee I thought you were joking about the whole being afraid of dogs thing, I didn't know you were so insecure about dogs".

Does that sort of frame things? Does that not come off as disrespectful and gaslighting?

You feel bad right now because losing anything we have invested time and effort into always feels bad. But time will make those feelings go away if you dont obsess over it.
