In what way? I get that it makes use of variational calc with the principle of least action but you don't need to understand it at extreme depths to follow the physics; just think of the variational derivative, that delta, as a sort of tangent vector in the space of paths.
Later chapters also have some PDE theory but I never felt like you need much more than calc 2 for volume 1 at least. You can read Sternberg's book on differential geometry and Olver's ODE and lie groups book first if you really want to master the math behind volume 1 before reading it. Amann Escher's analysis books also introduce the Lagrangian in volume 2, which is basically calc 2 (Amann Escher does analysis and calc simultaneously), but don't really cover calculus of variations beyond that.
