bit, that whole comment was an exercise in an unrealistic "solar-only" grid model that was brought up to whine about battery prices. The truth is they're not bank-breaking, even in worst-case scenarios.

The latest cope is a desperate attempt to pretend that every industrial player on every continent who's got perfectly profitable renewable generation going is only doing so because of subsidies... despite the fact the only thing being subsidized in many of these places is initial construction, and the plants have already paid for themselves.

Batteries function as peaking plants if you raise maximum generation targets, which is the end stage of all of this, but it doesn't need to be a sudden shift. You don't actually need to build dedicated peaking plants (in a vacuum, it's ridiculous to build all that fuel infrastructure when a battery bank is all you need), they're just what a portion of existing fossil fuel plants become as renewables gain greater energy share (which they are doing).

Basically, you don't tear down the fossil fuel plants, you just start using them less and less. Eventually most will cease to be profitable unless fuel prices collapse, and even in that case it only buys them a bit more time.

Energy has basically no quality competition - it's about as close to a real example of the simplified "supply and demand" model there is, and competition is effectively on price alone. The key renewables are passive generators - the only ongoing costs are for maintenance and upgrades, which still exist for fossil fuel plants. There's no long-term way for a fossil fuel plant to compete on price because they require continuous active resource extraction for fuel, where renewables are a one-time construction cost - even including batteries.
