Make heat a limiting factor. The device heats up generating the protective field and can only be kept on for so long before it becomes painful and eventually unbearable to wear.
There's "duelist" version that takes mere 10-15 minutes to overheat, originally invented for honor duels, so that combatants draw first blood from each other's limb without injury to head or body, now also used by gangsters for burglaries and drive-by attacks and law enforcement/military for breaches into gang territory.
Then there's "diplomat" version that can stay on for couple hours, enough for a length of public speech or making appearance at social event.
Seasoned mercenaries create their personalized rigged versions, with varying reliability, such as two duelist fields alternating, or field integrated into armor with array of alluminimum "fins" for better heat-dispersion, or field generator cooled by liquid nitrogen, trading risk of burns for risk of frostburns.
