This is correct, but not because roleplay le bad. If you come to the table with the idea of telling A Story, you have already failed. The proper operation of an RPG is to apply your creativity and your character's abilities to the world they live in to solve the problems they face during the completion of their goals. A story is what you get when you recount the events of these solutions to somebody else. If you come to the table wanting to tell A Story, you have primed yourself to do things that don't make sense for your character or their world for the sake of The Story, which is poor gameplay.
Unless your character is deranged and wants to force a story in-universe, you shouldn't be making decisions based on whether or not it would be a good story beat.
