Look if I'm honest? I want a tactics game, but I want a tactics game where I only have to give a shit about surrogate me, not a whole squad. And I want a game where I can choose to do any action I want and think outside the box. I want to be able to jump that 1-ft wall, I want to be able to spend two days to pickaxe through a wall if I have time, and most importantly? If I agree with the Villain monologuing. I want to join his side.
And that last one is important for several reasons. Having personalities you can play off is part of thinking outside the standard-game-box. So you're character need to be a little better than 2D personalities.

I also don't care for hexcrawling or dungeoncrawling, those are crazy linear. Too "Video Gamey." But nor do I give two shits about story and character progression. That's for novels. I care more about Cause and outcome. What I do, or what my players do, and what the fall out from that is.
