D&D Basic from the BECMI series written by Frank Mentzer. There could well be a bunch of people getting their panties in a bunch when I tell you that the rules in BE are almost entirely identical with BX, especially early printings of Mentzer before a few things were re-worked to allow for higher levels. (The BX series was abandoned before it got to the higher levels.)

Most of what that other anon I replied to above says applies. You also get a book that was written as an instructional guide not a reference book. One of the biggest recurrent declamations against the Menztzer Basic book is that it's not good as a reference book. That's true. That's why later books fill that role and the first book teaches you how to do stuff.

Early editions of D&D at early levels are simple in that they are designed to do basically one thing: dungeon crawl. They are easy for a beginner DM/GM. The art of making a campaign is not something they were intended for. How you will string a set of adventures into a campaign with maybe some sort of overarching plot is something that comes after you get the basics down and I don't think any D&D does a good job of teaching that. They give you some tools that could be useful but not a lot of instruction on how to use them but we've all figured it out ourselves, or stopped being DMs I suppose.
